5.0 out of 5 stars Goodreads: on the Kindle Fire and HDX series August 11, 2012
Verified Purchase
If you frequent or use the popular Goodreads site on the 'Net, then the name will need no introduction. But for those who are new to it, Goodreads is a 'social cataloging' Website that permits readers to sign up and register books to create their library catalogs and reading lists. It also allows users to create their own groups of book suggestions and discussions, along with posting their own reviews.

That being said, Goodreads on the Kindle Fire (and now the HD/HDX series) is an excellent way for users of this device to access this site. Once this free app is downloaded and installed, you'll be required to register with your email address, or you can choose the Facebook option if you have an account on that social media site.

The interface is clean, simple and familiar to any Goodreads user. In the main screen, are the following options:

> Updates
> My Books
> My Profile
> My Groups
> My Friends

Within the Updates section, you can see what your friends are reading and what rating they have applied (1 to 5 stars) and you can also update your own reading process. The My Books section give you access to all of your shelves, sort your bookshelves in a wide variety of methods, see what reviews you have posted and what comments might have been made by other readers... and you can even comment on them within this app.

The My Profile section gives you access to just that: your profile. This is how all of the others who access this site, and as with all of the other pages here, it's well formatted, clear and quite legible.

this app works exactly as intended - a mobile and easy to use version of the website. I read a ton and have been using goodreads since January as a tool to keep track of what I've read and update people on what books I'm reading. the app is great for on the go updates and adding books. so happy!

4.0 out of 5 stars I Love Good Reads, the Kindle Ap is almost perfect October 30, 2012
Verified Purchase
When I first started used Goodreads I thought it was just a fluff ap and not very useful. BUT once I figured out how it works and how to use it I was hooked, I absolutely love Goodreads!

*Keep track of all of the books you've read, as far back as you can remember
*Rate and review all of the books you read
*Read reviews of other readers
*Find friends who also read, either from Facebook or Goodreads
*Follow authors you like for new book notices and updates
*Join Book Groups

*There are no "book recommendations" on the Kindle Ap, unlike the Web ap. If the Kindle ap had the recommendations, this ap would be perfect.

HORRIBLE! The fact that this is a "standard feature" on new Kindle purchases is unacceptable. The "Goodreads" site is establishing an account in your name without your permission and/or knowledge. Without knowing that you have this so-called "social network" attached to your name and your identity, others may "follow you" on this site. I consider this an invasion of privacy! Then just try gathering information from the staff at Amazon to learn how to remove your information. The fact is that they have NO IDEA how to do this. After receiving several emails from Amazon which contained WRONG instructions, I spent the time myself trying to figure it out. For those of you who would like to know... First, ignore Amazon's employees instructing you to set up a Goodreads account! (Who really cares who "follows" what you are reading or reviewing -- unless someone wants to stalk you!) Second, on your KINDLE DEVICE itself, open the account information (tap on the three bars in the upper-right corner of your device). Next, select "Social Settings." As a result, you should receive a listing of three social networking connections -- Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads. Tap on the "DE-LINK" button to remove yourself from the Goodreads automatic connection.

Yes. The default on all new Kindles is that you are automatically set up to be "socially connected" to Goodreads -- like it or not! Another good point here is to ignore the bad advice and instructions you are receiving from the Amazon support staff; they will tell you that you can de-link from Goodreads within the Amazon website. I have found that information to be completely FALSE. I hope this information is helpful to those of you wanting to remove the "Goodreads" social connection from your Kindle device. Remember, you OWN your Kindle, and should NOT be required to accept any invasion of your privacy by Amazon.

This is a great app for keeping track of everything you read and sharing info about books with friends and the world at large. Easy to use and takes up very little space on your device.

1.0 out of 5 stars INVASION OF PRIVACY!!!! June 3, 2013
There are no reasons why any developer needs access to your contact list. NONE!! Why don't you people give a rats bum about privacy? Heck I don't care one bit if you give yours away but your lack of consideration for everyone in your contact list is absolutely appalling!
