From the Author

From one teacher to another...
I still work with students. Educators everywhere know what I mean when I say that. They know because oftentimes a presenter, author or professor will write a book or hold a workshop about something teachers should be doing in their classrooms to improve student learning, but the "expert" has not been in the classroom for decades. That is why this book is different. I wrote this from direct experience working with Google Apps in my classroom and classrooms in my school.
While writing the book I given about 3,000 high fives, 4,200 knuckle bumps, and mopped up 23 gallons of milk in the lunchroom. My students come up to me and ask, "did you use any of my work in the book?" The answer is YES!!! Many students contributed work for this book to show the reader how it can work to help implement Common Core and technology integration.
Writing this book has been a very rewarding experience. I hope you like it. Please keep in touch and tell me how I am doing.
Thank you,
Michael J. Graham

I am a secretary at a Google Apps school. One of my teachers referred this book to me, not so I could learn about how the Common Core is using technology, but because I needed a step by step tutorial on how to use Google Apps in the school setting. As secretary I am the hub of information in the school. This book showed me how to share documents with teachers and my principal as well as develop and maintain the official school Google Calendar. I never would have bought this book on my own, because it was specifically for teachers, but wow!!! the information makes my job better. Communication, collaboration and sharing gets everyone on the same page. As teachers are becoming better at using Google Apps they expect everyone else in the school system to do it also. Thanks, Betsy for telling me about this book.

I purchased this book looking for some new ideas for my classroom, but ended up returning it. It reads like a "Google Apps for Dummies." I can see how this would be useful if your school is using Google Apps on a school-wide basis and you need to familiarize yourself with it, but I found it to contain a how-to of basic functions that I already knew. The book will help you learn Google Apps, but I didn't find it to provide any creative ideas or lesson plans beyond really straight-forward stuff. I wish it would have gone into some more specifics, like in the progress-monitoring section, but the author really just throws out some buzzwords without ever going into, say, a case study or specific examples. Additionally, some of the restrictions provided by my school would negate some of the applications (such as the call function). As a personal preference, I think a lot of what is listed here can also be done better through other, non-Google apps, but I won't fault the book for that.

More and more schools are going Google, and this is your manual.

If your state has adopted Common Core, get this book. No matter what your level of computer skills are, you'll get something out of it.

There are sample lesson plans, there are even links to training videos.

Both you and your students will learn to take what they are working on ANYwhere and on ANY device. The future is here, this book makes sure you're ready.

Great book and super helpful. Not necessarily just for common core integration either. You can use it to integrate technology in your classroom better, even without it being tied to common core.

I should start off by saying that I have very mixed feelings towards the Common Core. I am married to a teacher and I have many teacher friends so I have some knowledge of what is entailed, required, etc. While the changes being made are with the best intentions, I can't agree with the methods. I will do my best to separate those feelings from my feelings about this book but they may be hard to separate. For that, I apologize in advance.

I am a technology support specialist at a large school district that is leaning towards becoming a Google Apps district. We have begun incorporating Google apps, Chrome, and some Chromebooks so I was very interested in how to make a smoother transition. There are some good points about this book. The author covers a lot of ground in a short book. Google apps is vast, with many features. This is a good overview of what Google has to offer and how to use the basics of those tools. His breakdowns of the common core state standards are helpful if you're not already familiar with them. He has sample lessons and suggestions for how to use forms, calendars, etc. As I am not a teacher myself, I can't say how helpful those lessons are. But one lesson in particular didn't seem all that innovative. It was an email to an author. Other than the use of a computer, it wasn't that different from sending a letter to an author. And as a bibliophile, I have to say that an actual letter would mean a lot more to me than an email.

There are a few other issues with this book. Most of it is geared towards middle grades and up. I would not recommend this for primary grades. K-2 students do not have the typical skills necessary, let alone big enough hands to type on a full size keyboard.
