Not recommended, November 18, 2010
This review is from: Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) (Paperback)
I do NOT recommend reading this book. It has numerous faults, including: font size in screen images is too small, and the screen images have poor contrast. The page design includes extraneous graphics. For example, when we are to type something in a field, the book provides a callout to the word "Type" plus an image of a keyboard. When we are to click on something, the book gives us an image of a mouse. The keyboard and mouse images are visual clutter.
The book is sometimes wrong. On p. 21 it says to click the Back arrow to open the first hit in a Google search. Nope!
The book ssys nothing about sponsored links. Instead, the first hit is described as "the most important" (p. 21 top).
The book starts out assuming that Internet Explorer is your web browser. Later it introduces Chrome.
There are signs of a lack of careful editing. For example, sentences and ideas are sometimes in an illogical order. For example, the first paragraph at the top of p. 271 is: "The first time you open Picasa, the program will search your computer for images. On your desktop you will see a new shortcut to Picasa. Click the icon to open the program." Wait. First I find Picasa's desktop icon (in the book the picture of this icon is blurry with a medium gray background and looks nothing like Picasa's bright, attractive desktop icon). Then I double-click the icon. Then Picasa offers two options for searching the computer for images.
On the plus side, the "Please Note" box at the bottom of page 271 is well-written and gives good guidance. This and a few other useful bits of information earned this book 2 stars instead of 1.

Empower seniors with computers, December 27, 2011
This review is from: Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) (Paperback)
They say you can't tell a book by its cover; but in this case, you can! The cover explains exactly what you are getting into. A book that explain how to protect, clean up and speed up your computer, made with senior citizens in mind. I have followed the Visual Steps series for a while and what I think makes them famous is their clear step-by-step teaching method of computer subjects, so on every page there is a big full-colour screenshot of the topic you are learning, together with a detailed step-by-step explanation of how & why this works. You can see this has been a method that has been perfected through years of experience with elder people and how they like to learn. A perfect match for any older citizen that wants to know why a computer slows down after a while, but more important, wants to know what to do about it.

A wonderful way to learn about computers & more importantly, the biggest search engine in history: Google. This is the single most useful skill to learn in modern times & fusing a beautifully crafted book into a teaching mechanism for the modern computer is an excellent way of learning that fuses visuals, text and interactivity in an excellent self-learning process. More for beginners then seniors - it is an excellent way to learn & be up to speed with the modern world of wonder.

Excellent, December 15, 2011
This review is from: Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) (Paperback)
I got this book as a Christmas gift. Did not think much of it but an influential person in my life nudged me to give it a shot and learn to use the internet (Google). This book clearly explains me in my own pace what I do & how it works. I even taught my son how to use the 'site:' tag, to specifically look through one site in particular. Excellent to learn about Google & computers.

Teach seniors Google, December 8, 2011
This review is from: Google for Seniors: Get Acquainted with Free Google Applications: Google Earth, Maps, Reader, Docs, Sites, Chrome (Computer Books for Seniors series) (Paperback)
A great book that does exactly what it says: visually teaches seniors to use GOogle and connect them to the information network that is the internet. Looks specifically designed to welcome newcomers into this world, by easing them into this technology with a familiar medium. Recommended for seniors or as a self-teching tool.
