SketchUp is a popular 3D computer modeling program. But what do you do with the model when you need old fashioned 2D construction drawings. Before Layout, you did the drawings from scratch. Designed for Set Designers (like me), Layout looks at defined views of the SketchUp model, usually straight at top, sides, sections, etc. and places them on 2D sheets like I did in Junior High drafting class. These can be represented by scale. Then you apply notes, dimensions, title blocks, door swings, and other annotations.

Personally I think Layout needs work, but I am told the new Layout that is included with SketchUp Pro 2013 is improved.

I came away, after working through these 160 pages, with a set of drawings that someone could have built from, although not as good as I make with AutoCAD. But I haven't tried SketchUp 2013 yet and the new developer of SketchUp is more interested in improving the product than Google was.

My only complaint, which I have discussed with the author, is the bindings of my copies of all three books in the series fell apart. I occasionally had to pull out the old glue bottle. But after working through all three books, SketchUp Hands On Basic Exercises and Advanced Exercises and Layout, I am now crating impressive SketchUp models and usable 2D drawings.

If you want to learn SketchUp and Layout, I recommend this series.

One of the few Layout books...follow the book, do the exercises and reach intermediate-level. One of the few Layout books...follow the book, do the exercises and reach intermediate-level.
