Book Description

October 28, 2003
Move over, Miss Lonelyhearts . . . Steven R. Schirripa, author of the runaway bestseller A Goomba’s Guide to Life, is back with more life lessons from the neighborhood, and this time the subject is love.

Now, your average goomba may be better known for his penchant for gold chains and macaroni, but Steve Schirripa knows there is one driving force in a goomba’s life and that’s love—love for his mother and her Sunday sauce, his wife and kids, his friends, his goomar on the side, even for his car (and he better not catch you eating in it, if you know what’s good for you). In other words, the goomba is full of love, capice?

Recalling stories of his own colorful journey from the streets of Bensonhurst to the bright lights of Las Vegas and stardom as Bobby “Bacala” Baccilieri in HBO’s hit series The Sopranos, Schirripa observes the finer points of amore in all its forms. Take, for instance, the boundaries of brotherly love: It’s okay, he explains, to go to a Mets game with your buddy but definitely not to a yoga class. Then there’s the tough love of la famiglia. Every goomba is a family man, after all. So you want him to tell the truth? Ask him to swear on the heads of his children. Steve also waxes poetic about romantic love, complete with goomba dating tips (“Do steal a kiss; don’t steal her purse”), what to look for in a real goomba broad (“Her? She’d go to the chair for me”), and a list of tender goomba movies (The Way We Was).

Alternately touching, telling, and laugh-out-loud funny, The Goomba’s Book of Love proves that no one loves as fiercely (or as frequently) as a goomba.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In his follow up to A Goomba's Guide to Life, Schirripa (aka Bobby "Bacala" Baccilieri on The Sopranos), with the help of co-writer Fleming (After Havana), waxes poetic, goomba-style, on love. The good goomba, Schirripa says, loves his mother (and her cooking), his family, his wife and his goomar-girl on the side; "boil it all down, and the bottom line on the goomba is...love." But needless to say, a lot of this novelty book is about sex. How do you get a girl into bed? Try "pushing her onto the sheets while she's making the bed." What's the polite way to kick out a hooker? Give her $100 for the cab ride. Etc. Schirripa tosses in a bit of memoir with his "you might be a goomba if" anecdotes, but-as with the first volume-this is probably for diehard fans and gag gifts only. B&w photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING?????, January 29, 2004
Well known to countless fans of television's The Sopranos as Bobby "Bacala" Baccilieri, Steven Schirripa turned to the world of books and penned "A Goomba's Guide To Life," a top seller not only for Sopranos aficionados but others who enjoy smiles mixed with neighborhood sagacity.

Now, Mr. Schirripa follows with "The Goomba's Book Of Love," read by the only voice to share this wisdom - Mr. Schirripa himself.

Love in the goomba lexicon refers not only to the attraction between male and female but his undying love for his mother and her pasta sauce, deeply felt affection for his children, and his car (he cautions that no one better be caught eating in it).

The goomba, it seems, is a veritable wellspring of love - for his neighborhood, his friends, his extended family and, of course, broads. The criteria for a real goomba broad? "She'd go to the chair for me."

For the uninitiated, the dictionary defines a goomba, also "goombah" as the senior member of a criminal gang. Also, for the uninitiated, "The Goomba's Book Of Love" is pure entertainment. If you want sex tips, consult Dr. Ruth. If you want laughter and good humor, listen to this.

Being married to a wonderful Italian, I could relate to the book in so many ways. If you're not Italian - never fear! You'll find stories and lines which you'll be telling and re-telling for months. Be one of the first to own this great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars STEVEN SCHIRRIPA -- THE GODFATHER OF LOVE, November 4, 2003

This review is from: The Goomba's Book of Love (Hardcover)
What do you get when you cross Shakespeare, Mario Puzo, and Dr. Ruth? The answer -- the greatest literary master on modern day romance, Steven Schirripa. This book should be REQUIRED reading for anyone who's still searching for true love. Whether you're a college student, a single mother or a criminal defendant who's been indicted under the RICO statute, Schirripa's dating advice is inspirational and hilarious. Not since James Joyce has an author written two masterpieces back to back. With "The Goomba's Book of Love", Schirripa takes his place along with Maya Angelou as a friggin' genius.
