5.0 out of 5 stars Memorable!
It's been at least 20 years since I've read this book and I can still remember verses: 'Goops they lick their fingers, Goops they lick their knives...'. Maybe this book was responsible for my life-long interest (obsession) in manners. Glad I found it here.

1.0 out of 5 stars It's a good book, but there is a better version
Goops and How to Be Them has been around for years. I was researching on the web for my son's 1st birthday... I wanted to get him a special book about growing up. I had remembered a special book from my childhood called Goops, but couldn't find any originals. Then I found a version edited by Barbara Ross, and I found out that she even lives in my hometown. What a joy...

5.0 out of 5 stars I love the goops! Best method for teaching children manners!, April 25, 2000
This review is from: Goops and How to Be Them (Timeless Classics) (Paperback)
As a first grade teacher, there are so many things that we are required to teach our children, that sometimes you just want to pull your hair out! Character Education is one of the most recent obligations of public school education, and there is now a hardy list of curriculums to be reckoned with. The Goops is the best instruction a teacher can use! It is reverse psychology at its best! The children absolutely adore them, but don't want "to be them!" I loved this book as a child, my own little boy adored them, and my first grade students learn from them. The best thing about this book is that creative teachers can utilize these characters in the entire gamut of education, thereby helping our children to internalize the importance of manners in creating a satisfying and happy life. Thanks so much, Mr. Gellett !

4.0 out of 5 stars hilarious, August 23, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Goops and How to Be Them (Timeless Classics) (Paperback)
I laughed at everything growing up and still do; right from the heart. It was read to me in 3rd grade by the teacher and I was the one the teacher had to reprimand because I could never stop laughing whenever she read it. I suppose I was the reason why she never continued! To those of you who have a sense of humor, enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Table Manners Have Not Gone Out of Style!, November 26, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Goops and How to Be Them (Timeless Classics) (Paperback)
This Burgess classic can make a difference in our modern age of fast and easy meals where etiquette seems hardly an issue. So what will our children do when they are invited to their first formal sit-down dinner? Well, the Goops will show them what not to do. This book really makes an impression - I read it as a child and I am still very proud of my table manners...my children would never be seen in the company of a ....GOOP!

5.0 out of 5 stars a delightful way to teach manners to your children, August 2, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Goops and How to Be Them (Timeless Classics) (Paperback)
In spite of the fact that many of the references in this book are obsolete--e.g., horses' hooves, coal, etc.--the drawings and the meter prove very engrossing to children. Not only do they love the ideas at the time, they will make the connection between observed poor manners and what they have heard in the Goops book long after you have closed the book. These books have been children's favorites for at least four generations

5.0 out of 5 stars I did well by it!, June 11, 2008
This review is from: Goops and How to Be Them (Timeless Classics) (Paperback)
I've had this book since I was 5 or 6 (more than 50 years ago). I've recited it to my daughter ad nauseum. Now, my grandchildren hear it from me and we use it to teach the manners that seem so absent these days. Just fun!

I remember the Goops from when I was a kid. My mom would read these to us, and now I am reading them to my children.
