Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Tired of winter, a child asks her grandfather if it will ever be summer again. He replies that she must wait and watch for the Goose Moon, for when it shines the geese will come flying back, bringing summer on their wings. The girl patiently waits and notes the little signs of approaching spring, until at last Grandpa wakes her one night to see the bright round moon and the geese returning by its light. This quiet story, somewhat similar in tone to Jane Yolen's Owl Moon (Philomel, 1987), is complemented by oversized pages with luminous watercolors subtly suggesting the chill of winter and the comfortable warmth of home. The book paints a strong relationship between the protagonist and her grandfather, bound together by their love of nature as well as for one another.-Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA

From Booklist

PreS-Gr. 2. As winter approaches, a girl and her grandpa watch the geese fly southward, away from their farm. After the season shifts, the initial fun of snowball^B fights and tobogganing gradually gives way to the tedium of spending every evening indoors and bundling up each day in jacket, boots, mittens, hat, and snow pants. At last, the longed-for "Goose Moon" comes, as the girl and her grandfather rise early one morning to hear the honk of returning geese, heralding the coming of spring. Told in first person from the child's point of view, this conveys her shifting emotions toward the beginning, middle, and end of winter with sensitivity and precision. An appended author's note comments on the Native American origin of seasonal lunar terms such as the Goose Moon and the Strawberry Moon. From close-ups to evocative landscapes, Postier's watercolor paintings effectively portray the girl and her grandfather within the beautiful rural settings. Carolyn Phelan

5.0 out of 5 stars a warmly reassuring story, April 26, 2004

This review is from: Goose Moon (Hardcover)
Goose Moon is a great illustration that warm and comforting literature can still be written for children today. The bond between Grandfather and granddaughter is realistic and the anticipation and wonder felt as one reads the story and takes in the illustrations.

The story and the depiction of it blend beautifully. A true keeper for any child's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Connecting to the seasons, April 5, 2007
By
This review is from: Goose Moon (Hardcover)
This would be a terrific book to use in a classroom unit on seasons before the use of calendars, telling the time of year with the signs from nature. Team it up with Thirteen Moons on Turtles Back (Joe Bruchac) and you have a winning combination for grades 1-5.
