I saw the Tv series, but I can't get a hold of the book, so I'll base my review on the BBC series.
A doctor inseminates a Gorilla named "Mary" with human sperm.The first line in the series is about how the child looks human; because it is. The story follows Gordon through infancy, childhood, and adulthood. As a child (with ape-strength)he has difficulty talking, until an operation gives him speech. Yet he exhibits many ape-habits; for instance he spends time in trees, sleeps "under" his bed, and grunts. As an adult he's a star athlete in Sandhurst Military Academy and everyone thinks he'll be the greatest of the British Army. There's just one problem...
HE CAN'T BRING HIMSELF TO SIMULATE A KILL!!!!
Apparently, apes don't have a killer instinct, and Gordon decides he can't bring himself to take another life. He chooses to become a Priest and live a life of peace, yet when he finds out who his real mother was, a Priest tells him he's not one of God's creation, just man's creation.
If you ever wondered what would happen if animals and people were crossed, this might be the result. There are no special effects in this movie, and no trick photography. Like most BBC efforts it relies on the use of emotion and a strong story to get the message across.
