This review is from: With the Gordon Highlanders to the Boer War and Beyond (Hardcover)
For anyone researching the Gordons during the Boer war, this is a must. It is essentially a series of letters to relatives from an Officer from 1899 to 1902, The Officer was was a prolific letter writer and any "gaps" are filled in by the author who explains background and what is going on etc. It is well put together but it does help if you have a grounding in the Boer war itself so reading a more general book about the war (I recommend Hamilton's March by Churchill) will put everything into context. Reading the book however, one cannot help but feel for the Gordons though as at one point, they marched over a hundred miles in only days. What was interesting was that letters written to female relatives were different to those writeen to his father where the Officer did not hold back about the realities of war.
