I am a big fan of Gordon Ramsay and when I saw he had a book of pub food I was keen to take a look, however upon reading the reviews here at started to wonder if it was worth buying.
Rather than trusting just the 4 reviews here (as of 1/11/10) I thought I would check on Amazon UK to see what the Brits thought of the book, since it is their food what better place to get an opinion than from the people who eat the dishes regularly. The reviews are overwhelming positive, no 1 star reviews. One review lists many of the recipes found in the book, having lived in England for a time I can tell you almost all of them are something you would find in an English pub. You can check out the reviews here: [...] I will be buying this book.

I purchased this book in the UK, but would have loved to have the US measurements instead. My husband and I have made several nice dinners and lunches from this cookbook. Yeah, I can see where the pub food in this book may sound a bit 'posh', but the British pubs in my neighborhood in London are trying to serve this type of pub food. Some recipes you definitely wouldn't find in a local pub - that I will admit, but they are still delicious. Everything we've tried from this book has turned out fantastic, especially the honey lemon chicken recipe.
This book is a definite keeper for us and when we return to the States, will have this on hand to try and recreate the Sunday roasts and the other pub food presented in this book. My recommendations for anyone trying out the recipes in this book are: read the instructions more than once, make sure you understand the steps, and have all your ingredients prepped and ready to go before you start.

I loved this book-since I am from England it was perfect for me. I could see where there may be some confusion for others over some of the ingredients but once you google them the U.S. comparison comes right up, same applies with the measurements. I would recommend it-great change to the usual dinner at home- Easy/quick cooking great results-suprise your friends!!!

The recipes are very good, but there are no pictures in the Kindle edition. I am not British, so I don't know how should the meals look like

Well I have to first say I am a HUGE Gordon Ramsay fan!!! With that being said, this is my 2nd cookbook that I have purchased of his. Unfortunately there are no recipes in this book that I would ever cook, but I really like to read and see some of the recipes that he has. I have looked through this cookbook, and do not see any food or recipes that even look the slightest bit appealing to me. I also have Gordon Ramsay's Fast Food cookbook and there are no recipes in that book that I would ever use either. But I really only purchase these Gordon Ramsay cookbooks because I like to read the cookbooks to see what ingredients he uses and what kind of food that he cooks. I know before I even buy the book that more than likely there isn't going to be anything that is appealing enough to me that I would want to cook it but I personally don't have a problem with that. Its a nice cookbook, and if you are a fan like I am and just like to have items of Gordon Ramsay's then this is a nice cookbook to purchase. I also have to say that there are some items in his recipes that I have never heard of or that you can not purchase here in the US, so keep that in mind when purchasing his cookbooks. I have found that there are several items in both cookbooks that can not be purchased or found here in the US.
Unfortunately Amazon does not keep this item in stock often. I ordered the book when it was out of stock and it took almost a month for me to get the book, and then it was out of stock again when my book was shipped to me. So, if you want this book, I would suggest just ordering it while it is out of stock. I have had this book in my shopping cart since just shortly after it was released in March, I ordered it at the end of June beginning of July, and I just received the book about 2 or 3 weeks ago.

I was so bitterly dissapointed when I got this book, having tried since before christmas to find it. Being a "brit" myself, I loved all the pub food, but I find this book has recipes that I will never cook, to me, they're too "elegant" for what we know as pub food. A lot of the recipes has ingredients that I have never heard of, and I think it's mostly english food, whereas I'm scottish, so naturally the food would be different. When I received my book, I looked through every page, and couldn't find one, not one!, recipe that I could cook.I guess I was looking for plain food, not fancy.

A good cook book for cooking good traditional British pub food in your own home, without having to travel to the British Isle.

I am not a GR fan, but I thought a book about pub food would be fun. Too bad I was wrong.
I can't imagine cooking any of this crap, never mind expecting someone to eat it. But I gues GR is laughing all the way to the bank. Seriously, I can hear him now..."I know, I'll do a book that says it's about pub food, but I'll use completely unappetizing recipes that have nothing to do with pubs instead! Great!" |
