4.0 out of 5 stars Darn close to 5 stars, October 28, 2011
This review is from: Gore Bike Wear Retro Tech Glove (Apparel)
Right out of the packaging, you know these are well-made, high quality cycling gloves. The stitching is perfect, the real leather backing is soft and supple, and the design is retro-chic with modern touches - like loops to help peel 'em off, and shaped padding to relieve pressure on the sensitive nerves in your hand.

The Velcro closure on the back (where I'm used to having it) works fine, and the soft terry section gives you plenty of area to wipe your brow and whatever trickles out of your nose on those chilly mornings. I wasn't sure if I'd like the holes in back that make this look like a driving glove, but it does help aid airflow and cooling. I chose white just for a change of pace from "black everything" in my club's kit, and because they look so freakin' cool.

Padding - like saddles, the right type & amount of padding in a glove is a real matter of personal preference. What works for one rider may not be what you're looking for. While not a "minimalist", I don't like a lot of padding in my gloves, and I tried (and returned) P.I. Elite Gel Vents, and Craft AB Gloves because the "independent" pads on the lower palm felt too big and actually seemed to put pressure on the heel of my hand rather than relieve it. The Retro Techs do a better job of spreading the pressure across the whole area where your hand meets the bar. There's not a lot of padding up in the top of the palm, where for me, I don't think there should be. This allows you to retain the right amount of feel without beating you up on a long ride.

Fit - I'm 5'9", 175 lbs, where a size 10 shoe and have what I consider average sized hands...pretty much makes me a size large in most gloves. These are snug, and the nice part about the real leather is that they will stretch and conform to my hand. The thumb is a little too tight for my tastes (deduct half a star) so I have a couple Ultraflate cartridges residing in the thumb-holes now to stretch them a tad. Otherwise, they fit true to size.

Value - I take good care of my equipment, and I don't mind spending a little extra to get the best performing gear because I assume it will last. These gloves can't be washed, so I'll be interested to see how they look (and smell) after some serious mileage. I'm replacing two pairs of Nike Swoosh gloves (circa 2005) that have served me well with these Retro Techs and a new pair of Nalini Origano mitts that take a very different styling approach, but are also comfortable for my taste and riding style. There are cheaper alternatives, but if you like the retro look and the comfort these offer, I think they are worth it. They are to me...
