Scream Bloody Obsession,
By Patrick Stott (Rolleston, Canterbury, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gore Obsessed (Audio CD)
A new Cannibal Corpse album. What's new? Very little, and that's the way it should be.You don't buy a Cannibal Corpse album expecting subtlety, innovation, and great musicianship. You buy Cannibal Corpse expecting bludgeoning death metal, blood thirsty lyrics and great musicianship. Corpse's riffs have become ever more complex over the years, and have continued to do so here. Hey, they ain't Meshuggah or Atheist, but there's a huge difference between what's on offer here and their debut "Eaten Back To Life". There are unexpected flourishes thrown in here and there, but the listenability remains. The solos are frenetic, as would be expected, but are perhaps a shade cleaner than in previous albums. The drumming is less straightforward than the earlier blast-blast-blast style, with a few odd rhythms thrown in. Never fear though, there are still still plenty of blast beats here! Perhaps the best feature of this new album are George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher's vocals. They are actually clear enough for most of the lyrics to be understood without closely following the lyric sheet. Corpsegrinder is still bestial in his delivery, but now the murderous lyrical creations are given a fuller horrific scope. Corpsegrinder's style suits the band far better than his long departed predecessor. He has developed a two tone style, both gutteral, adding a touch more variation and venom to the overall sound. "Hatchet To The Head" is bound to become a new moshpit favourite, with a shout along chorus in the vein of "Skull Full Of Maggots" and blast beats aplenty. "Dormant Bodies Bursting" sees the band cut back the speed a fraction on the chorus, to great effect. It's downright menacing! There are no dud tracks here at all. The final act of this album is a surprising, but extremely well executed cover of Metallica's "No Remorse". To describe it as heavy is an understatement! A nice solo has been added at the beginning, and the rhythm and bass absolutely thunder along... This is really what this song SHOULD sound like! Cannibal Corpse don't so much get in your face with this album, as leave you "Sanded Faceless".

The best with CorpseGringer,

I got this album when it was released. I have only heard of "Hatchet Unto The Head" on radio while I worked at Nightcrew... So it kinda inspired me of buying this album. The album "Gore Obsessed" is pretty much a "Bloodthirst" part 2 but a whole ALOT better in my opinion.Musically Cannibal Corpse has managed to create one of the best riffs ever made (listen to "When Dead Replaces Life" and you'll know by what I mean). The production is very clean just like Bloodthirst. Lyrically, it hasn't changed much so don't expect any surprises. CorpseGrinder's vocals are more amazing than Bloodthirst. Cannibal Corpse remains Cannibal Corpse and this work is their 2nd best release overall (their 1st would be Butchered At Birth). Anyways best tracks in this album are "Pit Of Zombies", "Hatchet Unto The Head", "Hung And Bled" and "When Dead Replaces Life". Buy it now, it can become the greatest release of 2002.

GORE OBSESSED!!!!!,

In 1988 a small band from Buffalo, New York known Cannibal Corpse would play in local clubs. In 1989 Corpse made a demo that would soon reach Metal Blade Records. Metal Blade signed Corpse quickly because, they felt that they were like Slayer! They had the speed, the violent lyrics, everything was in this band that Slayer had. Slayer has already gotten signed onto a major label and have gotten huge over the past years and Slayer were on Metal Blade Records. They really thought that they could break through so they signed them and in 1990 they released their debut Eaten Back To Life. No one at the time knew who they were because, that album just like all of their other albums today has gotten zero radio airplay, and has had exposure from MTV. In 1991 they would release the album that really pissed people off known as Bucthered At Birth. When Bucthered At Birth came out people started finding out who they were and this is when the madness happened. Bucthered At Birth is completely outlawed in Germany and it wasn't just because, of the gorified offensive lyrics it was because, of the album cover itself. Just like all of their other albums this one has the brutal easily offensive lyrics and the disgusting album cover. In 1992 they released Tomb Of The Mutilated and this is when the PMRC (Parents Music Resource Center) would get on Corpse. From their it looked like the band was finished because, they had a very hard time getting noticed. In 1993 Corpse released their EP Hammer Smashed Face which contained their most popular song Hammer Smashed Face. In 1994 Corpse would release their last album with Chris Barnes on vocals for the very last time known as The Bleeding. At the same time they were asked to play in Tom Shadyac's feature film debut Ace Ventura Pet Detective. They of course played a song in the film and since almost no one can understand what Chris was saying the song did not affect the ratings. After that film Corpse hit it big because, that was the first time they had really gotten noticed! When they got noticed on Ace Ventura one of their albums had actually gotten on The Top 200 Albums Billboard Charts! They would be known as the first death metal band to get on the charts! After Chris left Corpse had found a new vocalist that would soon become their actual front man! The new vocalist was George(Corpsegrinder)Fisher and he first appeared in 1996's Vile. Most people completely hated George because, he was nothing like Chris at the time but, when Corpse released 1998's Gallery Of Suicide fans would soon change! George got more into the music and the hate because, he wanted to be just as good as Chris or better. The album was very good but, was put down for having lazy drumming. In 1999 Corpse released Bloodthirst and in 2000 they released their first live album Live Cannibalism. In Febuary of 2002 Corpse would release what most fans including myself call Corpse at their finest hour! I think that it was in this album that Corpse started doing more different things because, they had a multi-platinum producer work with them! The producer helped Corpse on this album focus mostly on unmatched bass and drum syncopation. They also had powerful guitars that would match really well with their new songs! Corpse finally released the album called Gore Obsessed! This album is Corpse's best yet! It actually helps them get noticed because, it doesn't have an explicit label on it! However they made a limited edition version of it with Corpse doing a cover of Metallica's No Remorse! They did this so that they could mask the album cover because, it was brutal just like the rest! The song Pit Of Zombies consist of alternating tempos while Mutilation Of The Cadaver has Corpsegrinder doing a 14 second blood curdling screech! Cannibal Corpse has now become an act that has never defied their fan base but, slowly building it to where more people know who this act is. Corpse are banned from playing in Australia, New Zealand, and Korea. Corpse have toured world wide and are still a great act after Chris's departure from the band but, now Chris is with Six Feet Under. Corpse is a band that has a career of being around longer than a decade. This is real death metal and is out for the fans to buy!

Best Corpse album since The Bleeding!,
By
This review is from: Gore Obsessed (Audio CD)
This is the best Cannibal Corpse album with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher and gives me hope that this band may still have a bright future. The best part about this album is the vocals. Corpsegrinder seems to have finally gotten it right and his vocals absolutely shred. The best song on this album is "When Death Replaces Life". The riff to that song is unbelievable and is one of the best Corpse songs of ALL TIME! If you thought Bloodthirst was boring be sure to check this out because Cannibal Corpse has improved big time. This surprises me because it is rare for a band that is 8+ albums into their career and they can still improve and put out high quality albums. Hail death metal!

INCREDIBLE,

I bought CC's "VILE" on cassette tape a year or two ago, and still listen to it over and over in my car to this day. I just picked up my second CC album, "GORE OBSESSED", on CD today. It had a black cardboard slipcase covering up the front artwork, for good reason. If any little kid saw this album sitting on the shelf, it would scar his mind. Whoever does the artwork for this band is extremely talented. Musically, this album is INCREDIBLE and JAW DROPPING. The riffs, basslines, drums, and lyrics stick in my head. They are brutal, in-your-face, and memorable. All of the members in this band are extremely talented. I can't wait for their next CD. I heared it's going to be called "Kill".

Beginning of the Death Metal Mastery,
This review is from: Gore Obsessed (Audio CD)
This is the first Cannibal Corpse Album produced by Neil Kernon. I knew nothing about Neil Kernon before I saw his name on "The wretched Spawn" his second producing of a CC album. All I know about Kernon is that he fits perfectly with Fisher and the rest of the Corpse. My favorte Cannibal Corpse album is The Wretched Spawn, then this comes second. Of course these are in the Fisher era of Cannibal Corpse, but I also like GB and TWS better than ALL the CC albums, the previous Fischer albums and those with Chris Barnes. The best Corpse Album I liked from The Barnes era was The Bleeding. But Gore Obsessed and The Wretched Spawn are better in my humble opinion. Gore Obessed is the start of the AWESOME Cannibal Corpse era to me, thanks to Kernon. Heavy album with the gore lyrics that everybody knows, Fischer's sceams which want to make me scream myself, all make a great album. Not to be missed by any Cannibal Corspe fan, Death Metal fan, or any metal fan. Go for it! This was the start people, support it and lets hope it continues.

Cannibal Obsession For Death Metal Gore,
By Ronald Placeres "Chulo" (Miami, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gore Obsessed (Audio CD)
This is one of my favorite Cannibal Corpse albums in my collection. I brought it sometime in the spring of 2001. Before the release of the album, there was an MP3 of Hachett To The Head released on the Metal Blade Record's (the band's label) website and it ruled. So like many Cannibal Corpse fans, I had to wait until the release of the album and I did but when it was released, I took it home, heard it and it delivered.
Now before my review. I need to say some things that are very important. When the album was released, I bought 2 copies of it because the first pressings were limited editions featuring a cover of a Metallica song called No Remorse. The cover is not on this version of Gore Obsessed but all IS NOT lost. The cover is on the Worm Infested EP which I will review next. By the way, for the newbies that don't know, the original version of No Remorse is on Metallica's debute album Kill 'Em All. Now for my review. With this album, it is another new direction for the band. Through the band continues to mature with every album, they always retain the basic elements that have made them who they are in the world of death metal. So it's pretty much a case of incredible musical improvement, innovation and musicianship which makes the band very special. So all of this has been achieved but with no possible chance for selling out and this is the case here as with every album. Brutal vocals, blast beats, pounding bass and solos along with amazing passages, dynamics, creativity and penty of death metal heaviness and brutality along with many suprises. So this album has it all. Some of my favorite songs here are Pit Of Zombies, Dorment Bodies Bursting, Compelled To Lacerate, Drowing In Viscera and When Death Replaces Life. So buy this album and fufill your obsession for gore and buy the Worm Infested EP for the cover of No Remorse.

to really appreciate this album...I bought it back when it came out, i think at the begining of 2002? I love Cannibal Corpse, I know they are like everyone's favorite band to bash on, but these guys started it all for me as far as getting me into extreme metal. I absolutely love Gallery Of Suicide, Bloodthirst, and The Wretched Spawn, those have to be my all time favorite Corpse albums. Well, i have always liked this one quite a bit, i just always thought it kind of lacked something....until after about 3 years of listening to this album. Now, i have become Gore Obsessed!!! Man, i can't believe i used to think that some of these tracks were boring, what the hell was wrong with me? This album has everything that makes the 3 i listed above my absolute favorite Corpse albums. Corpsegrinder truely gets better with every recording, listen to his vokill performance on here! Savage Butchery, When Death Replaces Life, Hung and Bled, Mutation Of The Cadaver, i mean listen to that conviction he sings with! Pat and Jack's playing on here is top knotch once again, and Alex contributes some of the best music Corpse has made on this album. Listen to his bass playing closely, you can hear that he is a true master at the bass. He writes a lot of the music and lyrics on here and they are all killer! Paul does some of his best drumming on this album too, it sounds like they must have recorded this coming right off of a tour or something, the precision and conviction that they play with is unbelieveable! I absolutely agree with the fellow reviewer that said Corpsegrinder is under-rated, he has one of the best death metal voices in the genre. And this is coming from someone who normally hates high-pitched screams, but his fits perfectly! For anyone who thinks this recording is mundane, give it some listens and really pay attention, you'll see that it's one the best Corpse albums. They even pulled off a metallica cover that is better than the original, back from when metallica wasn't gay! highly recommended to Corpse freaks!

Totally Brutal!!!!!!,
By Mr_Grim (Bay Area, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Gore Obsessed (Audio CD)
Cannibal Corpse, first off, is NOT about pathetic emo lyrics, muddy power chords, and untalented drummers, nor is it about mindless screeching like A.C. It is about brutally heavy riffs, incredibly sck and twisted lyrics, powerful bass, and ripping drums. The lyrics aren't as deeply haunting as they are on The Bleeding (they were REALLY disturbing then) but they are still twisted. The guitars and bass interlock to create jaw-dropping rhythms, and the drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz continues to amaze me. The vocals are as sick as ever, and the guitars are as brutally heavy and ear-damaging as ever. Total headbanging material.
