5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and exciting
I have a gripe about many home-decor knitting books: They use expensive, exotic, imported yarns and then they dumb down the designs so the only interesting thing about the finished product is how much you spent on the yarn. This book does just the opposite. The authors take simple, inexpensive, easy-to-find materials and produce gorgeous results that are unlike designs...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice Eye Candy
"Gorgeous Knitted Afghans" is a wonderful book, with a lot of eye candy, but what I find missing is a picture of the back side of an afghan or blanket. There are not even hints if a throw is reversible - I don't mind looking differently on the back side - or if the backside looks bad enough to be hidden behind some lining.

To a beginner like me, starting a task...

This book does just the opposite. The authors take simple, inexpensive, easy-to-find materials and produce gorgeous results that are unlike designs you will find anywhere else. There is something marvelous about this book. It is truly unique.

Another nice feature is the wide variety of skill levels represented. You can find intricate cables and openwork designs as well as simple garter stitch in unusual colors. All are equally striking. The instructions are clear. There are color photos on almost every page. This book is a must-have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific knitted afghan book!!, October 16, 2004
This review is from: Gorgeous Knitted Afghans: 33 Great Designs for Creative Knitters (Hardcover)
I have seen many afghan books and this book beats them all. I cannot explain how gorgeous this book looks like. There are complete instructions on making the afghans in both written and chart format. The photography is absolutely beautiful and shows the afghans close-up. There is a complete thorough basic chapter, which includes how to embroider, attach pompoms, store, care, finish afghans, information on yarns, needles, and much more.

I have found that some of the yarns used in this book can be bought at your local Walmart, Michaels, JoAnn, or any craft store or at your local yarn store. The afghans uses ranges of yarns from acrylic to cashmere. When a book does not use cheap yarn, then it just turns me off. This book uses both expensive and cheap yarns, and I can easily subsitute the expensive yarns for cheaper brands!!

I can't say how satisfied I am with this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars very special, November 10, 2004

I recommend this for anyone doing knitted afghans. Each pattern comes with info on the actual yarns used but also with enough info to substitute others. The cover pattern is just gorgeous. The last pattern shows the authors' Indian heritage with the embroidery and shisha work. In between are afghans in aran stitches, lace, slip-stitch, mosaic, modular, etc. A lot of love from a trio of sisters went into this book which makes it so special.

Ok--so I was recommended to look at this book. Well, what did I think? The name fits the afghans--GORGEOUS!!! I don't know what else to say, the charts are colorful, the patterns are clear and most of all the afghans ARE gorgeous! Colorful, creative, and cultural. Just like I was recommended to buy this book, I recommend you to too!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good addition, August 21, 2005

I'm glad to have this book in my knitting library. Knitting an afghan/throw is a pretty big undertaking, generally made more tedious (in my opinion) by the fact that most afghan patterns out there are pretty non-descript (cables or stripes) and the yarns most of us permit ourselves to use in afghans are fairly ho-hum. The patterns in the book, however, represent a broad range of knitting techniques (including cables and stripes!). The authors have generally chosen better, "sweater-quality" yarns for their samples, and achieve some nice effects by combining strands of different yarns, something that I will keep in mind the next time I am picking yarns for a blanket. My 10-year-old son has decided he wants a blanket ("not another sweater"), so I gave him this book to look at; he flipped through and found one he liked immediately.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a very good book., October 12, 2004

I think those who are interested in making afghans should buy this book. If you don't have enough time to create your own design, you should follow this book because there are many, many beautiful designs here. Especially for this coming winter, I am sure the afghans in this book will be well received. This is "one kind of book" that will enhance your knitting collection.

This book is a 1 in 100 find. It is great to find a knitting book with so many beautiful and unique patterns. The patterns require some knowledge of knitting techniques. Every quilt is unique and yet practical. Great afghans!

Beautiful patterns, but unfortunately full of errors. Perhaps a coincidence, but nearly every pattern I tried had an error in it - make sure you take the time to calculate the pattern before beginning!

This book really lives up to its hype. The afghans are gorgeous and the directions are simple enough for an amateur (which I am). I would recommend

this book whole-heartedly for anyone who is anxious to try afghans. There are several easy ones to do and even the harder ones have clear instructions. Great book!
