Growing up in the pj's in Richmond, VA was the way of life for Bilal Cunningham and his family. Very gifted and smart he has the potential to become someone great. Without that "mother's love" and little to no motivation to pursue his dreams Bilal turns into a street pharmacist to make that fast cash.

Known as Gorilla Black in the streets, he was a forced to be reckoned with. He stayed on top of his game and ran his street profession as an legit business with the help of his crew that he grew up and Star the young lady he's been in loved with since his childhood. As there relationship blossoms and becomes rocky shocking secrets are revealed and Black may be lost to the streets forever.

Seven takes you on a journey from childhood to adulthood of Gorilla Black. I loved this story from beginning to end. Seven went against the norm for urban lit, she takes its to a whole different level.

Wonderfully written.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!, November 26, 2008

Gorilla Black is not your average hood story. From the first chapter I was hooked. This story is about a guy who grew up in household with an unloving and money hungry mother. Him and his brother had to basically look out for themselves because their mother was always drunk or laid up with a man. Bilal aka Gorilla Black was very mature for his age and very intelligent. He lived in the projects, but his creative mind and knowledge was far from where he lived. While his friends were gambling, smoking and drinking he always had his head in a book.

After his little brother Keon was shot and murdered, Bilal changed. He quickly became one of the most notorious drug dealers and everyone feared him. Falling in love with his neighbor Starr is the only thing that can him sane, but once she started to using his product his sanity slowly started to seep away.

I don't wanna give away the story too much, so pick it up for yourself. This book definitely gets five stars!!

(This is not just a hood story. It's so much more than that!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Mind opening and a slap of reality, May 12, 2009

Gorilla Black deals with authentic issues that surround the sales and use of street drugs. It takes you to a reality you might not want to face, but will hold your attention while feeding you the facts. Seven the author of this deep tale has touched on many subjects that we try to ignore but need to be brought to surface in any community. This novel can help adults and children in many situations that may not be ordinary to some, but are very realistic to others.

Job well done Seven. Continue to turn them out this deep.

5.0 out of 5 stars Speechless..., July 12, 2008
This review is from: Gorilla Black: A Novel (Paperback)
Wow...this book was amazing!! It kept you interested from beginning to end. There was a real plot with interesting twists!! this book had it all,, you felt like you knew the characters and felt for them. Even though this book has a similar theme of drugs and violence as do most of the rest of urban afro-american novels, its different.. it has way more to it, and theres actually a lesson to be learned. I dont want to give away any details from the book, but i HIGHLY recommend this book! You will be so satisfied!! I stayed up until five in the morning finishing it; good job Seven! Looking forward to more books from this author, she put it down!!

get this book!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally...., July 3, 2008
This review is from: Gorilla Black: A Novel (Paperback)
Gorilla Black is a new urban fiction story by the author Seven. Seven has truly broke into the writing game with an urban novel that is challenging urban fiction writers everywhere to step up their pen game and come with something different other than the norm.

It's a story about a young man name Bilal whose street name is Gorilla Black. This young man has the potential to be whatever he wants to be...but as most strays away due to reasons throughout his childhood that was never dealt with. I won't give the story away, but Seven keeps the reader wanting more with each turn of the pages. Kudos to you Seven for writing a book that has a message. I highly recommend this book...you wont' be disappointed!

2.0 out of 5 stars Lots of potential, little substance, August 12, 2010
By
This review is from: Gorilla Black: A Novel (Paperback)
While I give the author props for trying something new with urban fiction, this book just didn't do it for me. None of the characters were very well written. I was at least interested in Black, Putt, and Lucky but the rest of the characters seemed like cartoons. There was nothing consistent about their behavior or motivations. Take "Uncle Todd" for example. At first Black doesn't like him, can't sleep in the room with him, etc. Then a few pages later he's his "Uncle" and Black's willing to kill for him? A little exposition in between would have been nice, and gone a long way in developing the characters and the overall feel of the story.
