Book Description

December 30, 2007
Nearly two thousand seven hundred years ago-or some-where about eight hundred years BuCu-there dwelt a Phoenician sea-captain in one of the eastern sea-ports of Greece-known at that period, or soon after, as Hellas. This captain was solid, square, bronzed, bluff, and resolute, as all sea-captains are-or ought to be-whether ancient or modern. He owned, as well as commanded, one of those curious vessels with one mast and a mighty square-sail, fifty oars or so, double-banked, a dragon's tail in the stern and a horse's head at the prow, in which the Phoenicians of old and other mariners were wont to drive an extensive and lucrative trade in the Mediterranean; sometimes pushing their adventurous keels beyond the Pillars of Hercules, visiting the distant Cassiterides or Tin Isles, and Albion, and even penetrating northward into the Baltic, in search of tin, amber, gold, and what not. One morning this captain, whose name was Arkal, sauntered up from the harbour to his hut, which stood on a conspicuous eminence overlooking the bay.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Sequel to a Great Book, December 16, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I loved the Coral Island and I have read it several times since I was in middle school and I first found it amongst my mother's books. Just the other day I found out that all these years there has been a sequel to the Coral Island that contains the same characters, the same spirit of adventure and the same charming writing style.

No one should let this book pass them by if they have enjoyed classic literature like the Coral Island, The Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island or Robinson Crusoe. Especially do not let the review by Richi sway you. This book was written in the 1800s when gorillas were not endangered and hunting them was considered as appropriate as hunting deer.

This review is from: The Gorilla Hunters (Paperback)
i agree with the previous reader's review that the subject matter in this book may be [is] inappropriate for our times. i read this story first in high-school and its a great adventure ride from start to finish. i haven't read it since but decide to purchase another hard-copy as i lost mine. i never thought much about looking up other titles from this author but, after learning that 'the coral islands' is a prequel to this work. i plan on reading that as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gorilla Hunters, February 9, 2012
I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!! Please do not listen to the other reviews that say it is ok or just plain bad. Those reviews are NOT true and this is one of my all time favorites. Peterkin is so awesome!!! You will totally fall in love with these characters (especially Peterkin lol) and just the whole story in general. One more thing, those people that say this book is sick are NUTS!!! I mean, SERIOUSLY people, GET OVER IT!!!! Guys, really, this book was written in the 1800's and they didn,t know that gorillas were endangered. They didn't even think they existed!!! So really, believe me they are not cruel or over the top or anything about killing the animals in this book. I am a fourteen year old kid and I KNOW. I've read plenty of quality books to know what I'm talking about!!! I only read the best lol :-)
