Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-- Three above-average titles to add to the wealth of recently produced ecology-related materials, all of which emphasize the human effort needed for endangered species to be saved. Bailey successfully incorporates much information into the well-organized narratives and juxtaposes helpful full-color photographs and illustrations with explanatory captions to expand understanding. Readers learn of political problems in protecting the animals, economic needs of native peoples, food requirements and habits of each species, and the behavior of various types within each species. While the "Gorilla Encounter" is not so detailed as some of Diane Fossey's descriptions, it is appropriate for the age group. Rescue efforts are discussed in each volume, including attempts to educate potential poachers, the relocation of rhinos to game preserves until their numbers can be increased, and seeking new varieties of bamboo for starving pandas. An "Update" concludes each book with a map of changes in distribution during the last century and a description of the species and the numbers remaining. Most collections will welcome these timely titles. --Dorcas Hand, Annunciation Orthodox School, Houston
