From Booklist
Gr. 5-8. These two volumes in the fine AnimalWays series are rich resources for middle-schoolers. Both titles briefly explain scientific classification and show where the animals fit within the kingdom. They go on to examine physical and behavioral characteristics and the animals' relationships with humans, including their places in mythology and throughout history. Although passages in both volumes, particularly in Horses , can veer into unnecessary drama, the information is mostly presented in clear and exhaustive detail--a comparison of ape species' cranial capacity in Goril las, for example. But even children too young for the text will appreciate the color photographs, showing a range of horse breeds and irresistible shots of a young gorilla signing with her teacher. Divided into easily navigated sections, these two books are excellent choices for students seeking report material. Helpful glossary and resource guides appended. Check the Series Roundup, this issue, for additional titles. Gillian Engberg
