Describes the characteristics of gorillas and how mother gorillas living in zoos are taught to care for their babies.
K-Gr 3-Flashy titles without substance. Johnston offers alternating descriptions of what life is like for these animals in the wild and in a zoo. This jerky juxtaposition, especially considering the brevity of the books, is confusing. Difficult words appear both in bold within the texts with pronunciations, which some readers may find intrusive, as well as in glossaries. A good bit of each volume is devoted to showing how babies are born in each locale. The colorful, bright photos are the books' strongest features. The expressive close-up shots of baby gorillas are particularly appealing.-Sally Bates Goodroe, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX
