2.0 out of 5 stars A real customer review... May 19, 2011
By shyism
***10/25/2012 UPDATE***
My second Gosmart Clip broke a few days ago. The plastic seems to last only 6-8 months (I broke two within a year). Again, this product has a great idea, but the execution is substandard. I am now moving on to the RAM X-Grip mounts. They sell parts for you to rig your own steering wheel mount. The best thing: most parts are made from metal and the mount will not block your phone's charger port. My rig costs twice as much as 1 Gosmart clip, but I have no doubts that this will last me 5 years easily.

--

I will post my thoughts for those interested in this product yet feel that all the other reviews sound astroturfed:

I have been using this clip with a company-issued iPhone 4 for about 4 weeks now. It fits well! It's adjustable lengthwise, so it should fit any phone on the market. The only issue I can foresee is if your phone is too thick. Since my speedometer, tachometer, gas meter, etc. are in the center of the dashboard, this clip seems to be the most ideal for my Scion. Otherwise, I think there's a huge risk (safety and being ticketed) when using this clip.

Anyways, I use this device for two main reason: GPS and Speaker Phone.
Speaker Phone.
The clip puts the phone at a nice distance. I don't like wearing bluetooth devices, so the speaker phone works well since it's so close to you.

GPS.
It's great to enter in an address into the GPS at moment's notice. Usually, when plans get changed last minute, I enter in the new destination while at a red light. You can still hold the steering wheel while typing with your thumbs.

Gripes.
1. The clip is designed to clamp onto the top and bottom of your phone.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clever Gadget January 2, 2011

I had been wanting to find some way to mount my phone in my car when I was using the GPS navigation, but I didn't like any of the solutions I had seen. Most of them held the device on the dash or the windshield, which was too far to use the touchscreen easily. I liked the upper steering wheel position well enough to hold it there myself most of the time, since that was close enough to see and use it easily while also not being distracting. If only there was some gadget to hold it there...

And there is, and it's the GoSmart clip! It's universal enough to fit pretty much every phone and car out there with one model, and it holds the phone in the best position that I can think of without getting in the way of anything. Well mostly - the only beef that I have with it is that it covers up the charging socket on my phone. Though running a cable to the phone while it was attached to the steering wheel would be kinda awkward too. This won't be a big deal anyways if your phone has it's charging socket somewhere other than the center of the bottom or the top, which a lot of the newer droid phones seem to.

Other than that minor issue, I can't think of any problems with it. It's easy to set up and as sturdy as it needs to be. It doesn't let the phone flop around when you turn the wheel all the way around. I'd say it's pretty much great. If you use your phone for navigation, give it a try.

1.0 out of 5 stars Airbag deploys and you will be eating your phone September 24, 2012
I cannot believe that nobody has seen this coming. Putting anything in range of an airbag detonation is insane. From convenience to projectile in one fender bender.

The product has other uses, if I were the manufacturer, I would talk the alternative uses up, and specifically warn against its use on a steering wheel with an integrated airbag.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great while it lasted September 14, 2011

I was really excited to use this on my bike. I didn't ever really try using it in the car, cuz that would be stupid, but on the bike it worked well. I reinforced it with rubber bands, just to be on the safe side - iPhones are expensive. But I was getting everything ready for the Chicago L.A.T.E. Ride when the rubber strap snapped as I was attaching it to the handle bars. The hole just tore through one side. There's nothing I can do about it. It was on the exact hole I needed it on and I couldn't use it. I was very disappointed. $20+ down the tubes. I've thought about getting another, but haven't as of this writing. Use caution - it's not a durable piece.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good for Highway Driving May 31, 2011

The clip works as it says, the problem I run into is it hits my hands when I am making turns and the steering wheel is spinning, a problem you will never have driving on a highway, so it works best for that, otherwise making constant turns and parking I have to take it off the wheel so it doesn't hit my hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Be smart, get GoSmart! May 15, 2011

This nicely engineered and constructed little product can be a lifesaver! By positioning your GPS-enabled smartphone directly in front of you, the GoSmart Clip instantly makes GPS on your phone better than a dedicated GPS unit. This is because you do not have to take your eyes of the road to look toward the center of your windshield to look at a dedicated unit wobbling in its suction-cup holder. And the cost, while seemingly high, is a small fraction of the cheapest dedicated GPS you could buy. Whatever GPS app you have on your phone - Navigon, TomTom, Google, etc. - the GoSmart Clip eliminates fumbling with your phone to see where you are and works like a charm. Contrary to one reviewer's observation, you can mount your smartphone slightly off-center so you can keep your phone charger plugged in while using the phone's GPS app. Also there are at least three ways to avoid any negative effect of blocking the view of your speedometer claimed by another reviewer: you can (1) use your car's steering-wheel height adjustment to keep the speedometer visible; (2) turn on cruise-control; or (3) set your GPS app to alert you if you are exceeding the posted speed limit. As an added bonus for those who live where hands-free use of your cell phone is required - a safety-first practice I urge you to follow even where it is not the law - the GoSmart Clip solves that problem too. By locking your phone to the steering wheel, once you have turned on the phone's speaker, you easily can hear and be heard without touching the phone. If you have questions, which are unlikely because using this product is so intuitive, the company responds quickly and helpfully, in my experience. In short, the GoSmart Clip is a keeper....
