Book Description

The authors, father and daughter who are both United Methodist pastors in Western North Carolina, have discovered within The Hunger Games trilogy a number of characters and themes that have parallels to classic Jewish and Christian figures and theology. Pastors and teachers may use the following observations to engage congregational members and students in reflecting on theological themes within the trilogy. We invite you to use the release of the movie “The Hunger Games” in March 2012 and its sequels as teachable moments for highlighting classic biblical understandings.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really an acurate title March 19, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was hoping to read an article/story about how the Hunger Games could find some relation to the Bible. But really, I didn't. While it's an easy read and some ideas are well thought, the citations are wrong and some of the information from the actual books is not correct. All in all not really a good title for this, maybe something that has to do with the similar traits that some characters in the book could relate to in the Bible, but I think even some of their ideas are a little far reacting.

2.0 out of 5 stars More of a study guide than a book. March 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
As both a Christian and huge fan of the Hunger Games, I was hoping for a substantial, book-length investigation of the connections between the gospel and my favorite series. Unfortunately, this e-book turned out to be not much more than a short study-guide on the subject - each of the chapters are only a few pages long, and much of the analysis really just skims the surface, almost trying to turn the Hunger Games into some kind of allegory of biblical heroes. Personally I think the ethical and spiritual themes within the series are far richer and more complex than that. So while I commend these author's for their efforts, buyers should be forewarned about what they'll be getting. If you're a pastor or youth pastor looking for a quick discussion guide, by all means, download this title. However, if you want a more in-depth discussion of the series from a Christian perspective, you'll probably be better off with one of the other similar titles available on the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written short article provides insights April 22, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
This well-written short article makes some great comparisons between the Hunger Games, Christianity, and Judaism. I think it could be a fun way for kids and adults to learn biblical stories, as I know it educated me. The authors are also careful to state that there may be more comparisons that they missed (and would like your input on) and they'd also like to know if any of the connections were too far reaching. The short length of the document and the clear writing make it an excellent teaching tool for youth which could lead to excellent dialogue. This also could be good reading material for a book club.
