The Best Commentary on "Mark" Available Today!, April 27, 2004
This review is from: The Gospel According to Mark: The English Text with Introduction, Exposition, and Notes (New International Commentary on the New Testament) (Hardcover)
William Lane's commentary on "Mark" is very scholarly and balanced. He employs redaction criticism as his primary method to extract the most out of the "present form" of Mark's gospel and shows us how rewarding it is to do it this way. At the same time, Lane pays attention to many theological issues (such as "the Wilderness motif in Mark", "the Messianic secret", etc.) and historical/textual issues (e.g.- "Mark 16", Dead Sea Scrolls discoveries, comparisons between Peter's sermons in "Acts" and the literary/compositional style of Mark). The overall result is a commentary that is at the same time a great reference work, a great instruction manual and a great devotional tool. Personally, I became interested in many Gospel issues such as Form/Source/Redaction Criticism, the Synoptic Problem, the revelation/hidden Christ, the centrality of the Passion, etc. after reading this work. Highly recommended!

Dr. William Lane's commentary on the Gospel of Mark, October 22, 2011
This review is from: The Gospel According to Mark: The English Text with Introduction, Exposition, and Notes (New International Commentary on the New Testament) (Hardcover)
This book is a treasure that is now out of print, and we were delighted to find it. This seller shipped it immediately by USPS and we got the book about 3 days later, packaged well and in perfect condition. Dr. Lane had a genius for languages, with ability to read and write over a dozen of them, so he was appropriately careful with the sacred text. He died in 1999 and we never met him, but we feel like we know him. We've heard his voice (and you can too, on the CD that comes with musician and author Michael Card's 2006 book THE WALK: THE LIFE-CHANGING JOURNEY OF TWO FRIENDS
THE WALK, which is the story of their friendship and Lane's role as mentor to Card).
Dr. Lane's son - MARK Lane - has been our Sunday School teacher (in the Franklin House Studies class at Christ Community Church PCA in Franklin, TN, coincidentally the venue of Dr. Lane's final years). Mark Lane's Ph.D. is in math, but he brings his father's keen mind, respect for the inerrancy of the Word, and heart for Jesus into his examination of scripture. So for whatever we may lack in objectivity, we appreciate this fine commentary of his dad all the more because of that.
Come to think of it, that's the best motive for ANY Bible study: knowing the Author better because of relationship to the Son!
