As the other reviewers have said, this book is excellent and truly advanced. Yet, it's not so advanced that an advanced pianist will have to work months on each song. The arrangements have a lot of grandeur, and often flowing sweetness, too. This book is neither a boring copycat of every other book nor a compilation of bizarre arrangements full of discords. It's fresh - incredible to hear and play.

Here is a listing of the contents, since I'm sure many would like to know:
1. Sweet By and By (5 Pages)
2. He Hideth My Soul (4 Pages)
3. When I Can Read my Title Clear (4 Pages)
4. Heavenly Sunlight (6 Pages)
5. I Will Arise and Go to Jesus (4 Pages)
6. In the Garden (5 Pages)
7. I'll Fly Away (5 Pages)
8. There is a Balm in Gilead (5 Pages)
9. When the Roll is Called up Yonder (6 Pages)
10. On Jordan's Stormy Banks (4 Pages)
11. The Old Rugged Cross (5 Pages)
12. How Great Thou Art (7 Pages)

I would include the keys they are written in, but there is at least one key change in every song, sometimes several. Often the songs have complicated keys (such as 4 or 5 flats) with interludes of easy ones. It keeps the songs interesting.
The Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art are very advanced and absolutely thrilling to play. Definitely my favorites!

Finally, an "advanced" arrangement that really is advanced. We professional pianists who are not arrangers rely on people like Hayes to not "mickey mouse" the tunes, and his arrangements in this book are great - rhythmically challenging, and his improvisation sections which sometimes are introductions, or midsection breaks fit the song beautifully. and, another relief, because his arrangements are so fresh and exciting he does not have to resort to knee jerk key changes, a pet peeve of mine. highly recommended.

I have over two hundred sacred piano books, and this one is my favorite. In fact, How Great Thou Art is the best arrangement I have ever found of this song. His music is fairly difficult, but I enjoy the challenges. I highly recommend this book.

Before ordering this book, I had never tried any Mark Hayes stuff before, so I didn't know what to expect.
This book left me breathless! I absolutley love it! Nice varitey! A bluesey piece, 2 jazzier ones, 2 ballads, and the rest just gorgeous!

A word of warning to the advanced pianists -- these are not very challenging pieces... even the timing isn't a big deal ESPECIALLY is you listen to the enclosed CD - why, it's practically cheating! The only other drawback, would be the length of the pieces. When I read the subtitle ('For Concerts and Recitals), I thought they would be long, concert-like pieces.
They average 3-4 pages each. The only one I would do for a concert would be 'How Great Thou Art.' It's the longest, and the most challenging.

But really, they are still very well put together. I play them for fun or at church. They're a snap to learn and I really enjoy playing them.

Another great thing is how Mark Hayes puts in his performance notes. He really reads the words to a song before he sets about to arrange it. That always helps!

Mark Hayes definately has the knack!

I love Mark Hayes, but some of his stuff just isn't my style. This book is about 50% my style, and 50% not. However, the 50% that is my style is just incredible. None of the songs are bad, just some I just don't enjoy playing. The CD is great to listen to all the way through.

My favorites are Old Rugged Cross and How Great Thou Art. These are incredibly moving pieces.

For any advanced Mark Hayes fan, I highly recommend this book.

I have several of Mark Hayes' books. I like all of them. This book has some great arrangements. Some of them are quite advanced and I will probably only play them for my own enjoyment as I will never get them worked up to church performance standards. I agree with the reviewer who said "The Old Rugged Cross" and "How Great Thou Art" were their favorites. They are definitely the most difficult.

Mark Hayes couldn't describe these arrangements any better when he said, "You'll find these arrangements to be joyous, reflective, passionate and playful." From ragtime, to rhythmic, to playing a Glissando, to a jazzy shuffle, these songs are challenging and beautifully arranged. I am so going to enjoy having to dig my heels in a little to accomplish these songs. The "Performance Notes' are a terrific help to understand what the arranger was thinking when he arranged each song, and helps the pianist to feel the music a little better as it is played. The book also includes the lyrics to each song in the back of the book. Highly recommend this for the ADVANCED pianist.

I would consider myself advanced, but this book is pretty difficult for me. Some of the pieces aren't too bad, but since I have three small children, I will have trouble having time to get one of these ready for an offertory. However, it is beautifully written, a lot of variation. I LOVE the style and would recommend this book for *late* advanced pianists!
