5.0 out of 5 stars Great supplement for Bible Study Group
I am right now using this commentary as I lead a group with a half hour video from an EWTN and then we use the book to answer the review questions which the class does for homework. Easy for beginner students and learned enough to provoke my thoughts as well.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of eyes
I bought the Ignatius Study Bible, Gospel of John, to see if it would be a suitable text for a Bible study group for older Catholics. I especially was looking forward to reading the comments by Scott Hahn. I enjoy his writing style and his "pastoral" slant on many religious topics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top of the list, May 22, 2008
This review is from: Gospel of John: Ignatius Study Bible (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
For depth of study combined with clarity of explanation, this is the top of the list of commentaries on John. Having read many commentaries on John, I can say without reservation that there is no better commentary (Protestant or Catholic) on the gospel of John than this one. The archeological and historical information is up to date and in enlightening such as in the detailed discussion concerning the chronological difficulties of when Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with his disciples. Rather than avoiding such questions or over-simplifying the question, the authors take those difficult questions head on and satisfy us with deep analysis providing the various options in resolving those questions. All the while, the discussion is within the boundaries of church doctrine and authority while still allowing for freedom of exploration.

Very highly recommended for group study or personal devotions.

I bought the Ignatius Study Bible, Gospel of John, to see if it would be a suitable text for a Bible study group for older Catholics. I especially was looking forward to reading the comments by Scott Hahn. I enjoy his writing style and his "pastoral" slant on many religious topics.

However, I will not be using this booklet for any study group--not because of the content but because of the small (some would say tiny) print.

The text of the gospel is barely readable. The commentary which takes up the lower half of the pages is so small as to be unreadable. (Set your browser or word processor to 50% font size--or Arial 6 point-- to get some idea of the size of the font.) The only way my tired old eyes will be able to read this is with a magnifying glass.

(My wife who is an avid reader with pretty good eyesight picked up the booklet, opened it and let out a cry, "This is ridiculous: no one can read that print! ")

I can't recommend this booklet for anyone with poor or aging eyesight.

This book cries out to be Kindle-ized so that the text size could be enlarged onscreen for those of us at the age of cataracts and corneal dystrophy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Hahn Unpacks the Gospel of John--A Wonderful Study Help!, February 26, 2008

The Gospel of St. John holds so many treasures for the reader. Dr. Scott Hahn uses a clear, conversational tone in the wonderful footnotes of this Ignatius Study Bible Edition. Quotes from the Church Fathers, references to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, historical and cultural insights, and word studies help the Catholic reader understand the doctrines and events of John's Gospel in a manner true to the Magisterium.

If you are a little intimidated by studying the Bible because you aren't sure you will understand it according to Church teaching...if you are looking for deeper layers of insight into Sacred Scriptures--in short, if you, at any level of expertise, would love a wonderful resource, this study edition of John's Gospel is for you!

Includes an introduction to the Study Bible, an introduction and an outline to the Gospel, as well as topical essays such as "When Did Jesus Celebrate the Last Supper?" and study questions.

AS with all of his contributions to the other three Gospels and The Acts, Scott Hahn has provided invaluable help to both understanding and appreciating the Gospel of John. I loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars john, January 23, 2012

i read a lot of scott hahn so i decided to read his notes on the new testament and genesis...

i read them, i love them!!!

each front of one has the author - not who he was, but everybody he could be! then he goes on to explain all the main couldbes of the author, and why most picked the author they picked... and then the church's answer to it...

he explains the layout of the book, who it was written to/for, and why...

in the notes, at the bottom of each page of the book, the notes are abundant...some notes, because if you put in every note on every thing you end up with...the catechism, lol! no seriously the notes are worth reading, especially "contents and unity", "living tradition", "analogy of faith", topical essays, word studies, and charts...

i like curtis mitch, too...but the intro to the gospels, etc, arent in the individual books, and the study questions for understanding and for application arent in the new testament...

im looking forward to the old testament coming out individually and the old testament as whole...

also some (i dont know how many or how to order them) comes in large, easy to read format! great for stroke, lol!

4.0 out of 5 stars Concise and thorough, September 26, 2011

This review is from: Gospel of John: Ignatius Study Bible (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
The text (from the Catholic Edition of the RSV) is a fabulous translation, not too modern, but more intuitively readable than, for example, a Douay-Rheims. The notes are absolutely wonderful and go above and beyone typical Bible footnotes. The study questions were a bit obvious for my tastes, but not everyone reads on the same level. My only other regret were references to notes in other books of the bible, which I was of course unable to flip to (but, as this is part of a larger overall work, this is to be expected).

Overall, a great book, has just what you need to explore John, and the price (since you're only paying for one book) makes it a wonderful value.
