Good Catholic study edition.,
By Marcel LeJeune (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Gospel of Luke: The Ignatius Study Guide (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
Curtis Mitch and Scott Hahn have put together a wonderful study edition of the RSV (A wonderfully accurate translation). It offers in-depth notes, maps, word-studies and cross-referencing to magestrial texts and the Church Fathers. This is a great book for both individual and group bible study. The questions are better than most study questions, but still could be a little more directed. The one complaint is that we have to wait between series.

Helpful New Testament Aid for Catholics,
By
This review is from: The Gospel of Luke: The Ignatius Study Guide (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
Discussing scripture with my Protestant friends often leaves me at a loss because there are innumerable annotated and study bibles available to them, but few for Catholics. The Ignatius Study Catholic Study Bible series helps bridge this perceived gap. Of particular help are the frequent notes with symbols (e.g., a set of keys that stands for church tradition, a dove that stands for spiritual tradition, etc.) intended to help Catholics understand the correlation between scripture and the tenents of our faith. Of additional help are the occassional short essays on subjects found in Luke's gospel such as the Census of Quirinius (mentioned in the infancy narrative), the Pharisees and Sadducees that provide in-depth information that assist in gaining a better understanding of the evangelist's message. Also, there are study questions (which are pretty good) at the back of the book plus blank pages for note taking. A valuable resource for Catholics who wish to go beyond weekly homilies for an understanding of scripture.

Catholic Bible Study Tool for Individuals or Groups,

This review is from: The Gospel of Luke: The Ignatius Study Guide (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
The Ignatius Catholic Study Bible is a great tool for small groups seeking to understand the Bible from a Catholic perspective. This knowledge-packed, 82-page paperback, is composed of five major sections: The commentary includes historical background, with maps, and categorized notes. The notes have symbols next to them indicating whether they are: The study questions are grouped by chapter, and then broken down into two sections per chapter: "For understanding" and "For application." The understanding questions are textual analysis questions. " The application questions are pertinent for the spiritual lives of Catholics. However, space was not provided within the questions themselves for notes. There are several notes pages at the end of the book, but white space was not allotted within the questions themselves. Overall, the organization of this study guide makes it an effective tool for novices, and challenging for for more knowledgeable Catholics.

An excellent series,

This is a great tool for understanding the Gospel of luke. The book starts off with an introduction explaining the inerrancy and the authority of scripture and the proper way of interpreting it. There are many helpful notes, word studies, and essays in this book. One of the essays is on Mary Ark of the covenant, another is on Jesus, the son of Man. The study questions in the back of the book are helpful for understanding and applying Gods word to our life. This whole series has helped me have a better understanding and a greater love for Gods word.

Our Bible study group is using this book now. We've had a hard time finding good Catholic resources. We're only in the 2nd chapter now, but so far we've loved it. I already pre-ordered two cpoies of the study New Testament that this book will be a part of.
The depth of information is very good.

Valuable Source for Bible Studies!,

This review is from: The Gospel of Luke: The Ignatius Study Guide (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
Each member of our Bible study group purchased a copy of the Gospel of Luke and are learning so much. We continue to be amazed at the scholarship of Scott Hahn and Curtis Mitch in writing the commentary to this Gospel. The other books in this series are equally great, and we can hardly wait until they finish their research of the entire Bible.

Great Guide,

This review is from: The Gospel of Luke: The Ignatius Study Guide (Ignatius Catholic Study Bible) (Paperback)
This is a wonderful guide. I highly recommend it to everyone, students, teachers and ministers. As a general study guide it is invaluable.
Students of theology and those people interested in a more detailed study, would probably like to supplement this with Jerome's Commentary and those of Raymond E. Brown especially the anchor bible series. This guide includes topical and word studies that are very well done.

i read a lot of scott hahn so i decided to read his notes on the new testament and genesis...i read them, i love them!!! each front of one has the author - not who he was, but everybody he could be! then he goes on to explain all the main couldbes of the author, and why most picked the author they picked... and then the church's answer to it... he explains the layout of the book, who it was written to/for, and why... in the notes, at the bottom of each page of the book, the notes are abundant...some notes, because if you put in every note on every thing you end up with...the catechism, lol! no seriously the notes are worth reading, especially "contents and unity", "living tradition", "analogy of faith", topical essays, word studies, and charts... i like curtis mitch, too...but the intro to the gospels, etc, arent in the individual books, and the study questions for understanding and for application arent in the new testament... im looking forward to the old testament coming out individually and the old testament as whole... also some (i dont know how many or how to order them) comes in large, easy to read format! great for stroke, lol!
