5.0 out of 5 stars Don't Miss This One, Folks
I sure wish the record company had promoted this one. It is a simply wonderful record, with tons of heart and soul. Doug Gray sings beautifully, and the song "Mama Don't Cry Anymore" should have been a country radio hit. Guess there's no room for the "old pros" with Shania and all the other youngsters crowding around the microphone! Anyway, this is an...

Being a teenager in the 70s in the Midwest, I couldn't escape hearing the Marshall Tucker Band. I recently acquired a 2 CD greatest hits package and enjoyed reliving some of those memories. When I discovered that a later incarnation of MTB had recorded a gospel CD, I was greatly interested. I returned to the faith as an adult, and I'm not enamored by contemporary Christian music. So to have a gospel CD performed by a band from my (wild) youth seemed appropriate.

This band is not, of course, the same MTB as the original band, but they do have one of the original vocalists who sang most of their early hits. These songs are performed in a style of country that you commonly hear on the radio today - with a little rock flavor. Most of the songs are very well done and I look forward to enjoying this CD for years to come. There are a few low points - a second lead vocalist takes over on a few songs, and I think there could have been other songs he would have been more effective than the first lead vocalist, and vice versa. Otherwise this is a listenable set of gospel songs, sung with conviction, played in a contemporary country style.

Although this CD is now out of print, check out some of the other Amazon dealers. It's still available and at decent prices too. I received my CD quickly and it was new.

Beautiful.

5.0 out of 5 stars MTB Redeems Themselves with "Gospel", August 6, 1999

There is something magic about this release. The beauty of "Eye is On the Sparrow," a duet between Doug Gray and daughter Gabrielle; the absolutely MTB sound of "Wayfaring Stranger," and the bittersweet song "Mama Dont Cry Anymore," which was recorded months before the accidental death of Gray's Mother in an auto accident; the country-rocking "Singin with the Saints." Every song is a gem. Bassist Tim Lawter sings "Beauty of Life," a song written by guitarist Rusty Milner, and it is absolutely great. This is much more than just another good MTB album, it is a testimony. Beautiful and uplifting.

Although I like the MTB, this isn't really one of their best cds. It's a bit overproduced, like most contemporary gospel. This is a genre that's at its best when stripped down to the bare essentials--good, soulful singing. If you're new to MTB, try some of the other cds in their catalog.

Having grown up in the rural south, I can say that this is a CD made from the soul. This is a set of songs that make the heart sing and just makes you feel good. If you like or love Gospel music then this little known gem should be in your collection. I liken this to the box sets by Mahalia Jackson in that the songs are true and the delivery is uplifting. A wonderful masterpiece.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Will Love Gospel!, January 17, 2003
By A Customer

It will be very hard to find a better gospel album than this one. The Tucker boys do an excellent job here; it is too bad it wasn't given much attention upon its release. It includes traditional southern gospel greats such as "Heart and Soul," and "Eye Is on the Sparrow," as well as the songs written by band members such as "Momma Don't Cry," and "Beauty of Life." Other highlights include the classic Tucker sounding "Wayfaring Stranger," with the great flute playing, and the jazzy "Will the Circle Be Unbroken." Any gospel or Tucker fan will cherish this album as much as I do.

This is truly an album of gospel music. I don't think it is a very good gospel album.

This is not really the Marshall Tucker Band. This is Doug Gray's band. Gray was the original vocalist for the Marshall Tucker Band. But that band disbanded in 1983. The leader of that band, Toy Caldwell, died in 1993. Doug Gray's Marshall Tucker Band does not sound anything like the original.

In 1988, Gray and Jerry Eubanks (sax and flute)created a new band, using session musicians and called it the Marshall Tucker Band. They did not sound like the old Marshall Tucker, except when playing the old songs in concert. The band was originally more focused on tradional country music. I haven't heard anything I like by the band.

Eubanks has left the band, and the sax and flute on this album is played by someone who came from Firefall.
