This is a great collection of Mahalia Jackson's singing, touching on both well-known and obscure gospel songs, and of course her voice is really beyond description. I bought this set specifically because it has the first four songs Mahalia recorded, in 1937, when she was only 26. (They're the first four songs on cd 1.) It would be nine more years before she recorded again, in 1947, believe it or not - and those track are here too. On the earliest four her style was much more raw, and it's absolutely amazing to hear, really, a revelation. Highly recommended!

if you grew up w mahalia, this is a great place to get back in touch. i got a used set for 6$ including shipping. words do not do her music justice, so i will not try and describe the majestic sounds on these disc.
