No way am I the first to review this fantastic disk.

You can read other amazon reviews of some of her other disks, all of which will tell you that she is one of the great, unfortunately, hidden talents in gospel/jazz/r&b.

Gospel Train stands out, particularly for the sizzling, rocking version of Jericho.

Getcher-self some Seester Tharpe right now!

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is incredible - both her singing and her guitar playing are fantastic. She performs gospel songs infused with r&b and blues, and was transforming gospel and bringing it to the public long before the well-known pioneers Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, The Staple Singers, and James Brown. They took gospel intensity and song forms and turned them into soul and r&b in the fifties and sixties; Tharpe is more gospel-based, and began her recording career in the thirties - though she recorded a bit of more straight-ahead blues - and got into a lot of hot water with the gospel community for her trouble! She continued to play well into the late sixties. The Proper label 4-cd box set is excellent without a doubt, but I actually prefer this because the fidelity is so outstanding. For anyone who loves music from that magical time before rock'n'roll, soul, and r&b became the 'thing,' Tharpe's music is a must, and really something of a revelation. Unfortunately she's one of American music's sorely overlooked foundations, so do yourself a favor and hear her music!

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is not well known today but, in her day, she was one of the leading female gospel and blues singers and guitarists.

She had a great voice and a very interesting guitar style.

This is an album recorded later in her career, probably in the late 1950s or early 1960s (the liner notes don't show an original release date for this album), by Mercury Records. The sound is good, Tharpe's voice is in great form and she's backed by a very good band.

The album is 12 songs, all gospel, with a total playing time of just over 31 minutes. The music on this CD is 5 star material but I've deducted one star for the short playing time. Mercury Records is a major label; surely there were some good quality out takes from the original recording sessions which could have been used to fill much, if not all, of the remaining 40 minutes of playing time on the CD. Perhaps Mercury Records has more Sister Rosetta Tharpe recordings from other sessions. If so, the additional material should be put on this CD to fill it the remaining playing time. Poor marketing, Mercury Records!

But the 31 minutes of music on the CD is great music. If you're familiar with Sister Rosetta Tharpe, this is a CD that's well worth adding to your collection. If you're not familiar with Sister Rosetta Tharpe but you are interested in hearing one of the best mid-20th century female blues and gospel singers and guitar players, this CD is worth your attention. It would be a good introduction to Sister Rosetta Tharpe for anyone not familiar with her music.
