George "Graces" the Gospel Genre,
By C-Beck (Portland, OR United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: In a Gospel Way (Audio CD)
An incredible feat for Jones worshippers around the universe. "In a Gospel Way" delivers the listener to every corner of the Possum's impossible vocal range. If you like to see him raise hell, wait until you hear him open the gates of heaven. From his unsurpassed "Amazing Grace", to the awe-inspiring "Mama's Hands", George's soulful renditions will bring you to your knees. I'm not a religious man, but this record made me feel like I had been saved.

George Jones is someone I wasn't really familiar with going into last night- I mean, I knew he was some popular country singer from 40 years ago, and I knew there were periods in his career where he had a ton of success, but I never really sat down and actually *listened* to any of his albums.Well that all changed last night. In a Gospel Way has some really good vocals. You can tell George is really passionate about delivering meaningful lyrics and finding vocal melodies that fit the country style perfectly and, well, it *works*. I can probably do without yet ANOTHER version of "Amazing Grace" (I must have heard at least 20 versions from various artists- enough is enough!) but the rest of the album is a satisfying blend of country combined with gospel to deliver a great experience. I normally don't listen to this kind of music (I'm a big fan of jam bands such as the Allman Brothers, Caravan, and Camel) but I must admit, this is some pretty good stuff and I wouldn't mind giving In a Gospel Way another spin.

The Gospel according to Jones,

This is a reissue of an album from 1973, when the great George Jones (country's greatest singer ever, period.) was working with producer Billy Sherrill. It's one of many gospel albums Jones recorded in his career, and one of the best.
