Editorial Reviews

Review

The Gossamer Tree, a beautifully produced fantasy picture book, is especially noteworthy for its muted, yet glowing color illustrations. They gently capture the mood of the story. Craig McFarland Brown's distinctive work has graced children's books published by a number of trade houses as well as this small press. This is a simple story about the power of friendship, told with warmth and imagination. Lost in a storm on Christmas Eve, insect characters Spider, Cricket, Firefly, and Ladybug are given shelter by four starving woodmice who live in a tree. The poor mice have little to share but kindness and caring, but these qualities work miracles. After relating the sad stories of their downfalls, the four creatures feel reborn. Firefly glows more brightly; Cricket sings again; spider spins finer gossamer strings; and lucky Ladybug regains her magical power. Together they decorate a tiny spring of pine for a Christmas tree. Then Ladybug, with her gentle touch, causes food to appear everywhere. All the creatures share a bountiful meal that their friendship made possible. This first children's book by Toni Knapp would make a pleasant addition to Christritas-story collections for libraries and bookstores.
