The Bo-Keys are the contemporary evolution of the Memphis funk and soul sounds of Stax/Volt and Hi Records. "Got To Get Back" is a snapshot of the group in the studio, jamming on instrumentals in the tradition of Booker T & the MGs and Willie Mitchell and backing up some of their favorite vocalists such as Otis Clay, William Bell and Charlie Musselwhite who make guest appearances on the album.

A modern Memphis soul classic - the REAL DEAL!,

In a world of ersatzes soul here we have the real deal, a record that literally drips the sweat of deep soul and the righteous grooves of classic Memphis soul. These are not the Dap-Kings, this is a band made up of real Memphis soul giants including Charles "Skip" Pitts, Howard Grimes, Willie Hall and Floyd Newman among others. Led by bassist Scott Bomar, The Bo-Keys are vets from Stax and Hi Records are not pretenders to the throne but the real kings of soul. The disk itself is a wonderful mixture of classic Memphis soul instrumentals ("Hi Roller" and "Just Chillin'"), funk ("Work That Sucker") and blues (I'm Going Home"). It features great vocal guest spots from the Stax master singer William Bell ("Weak Spot") and Hi Records Otis Clay ("Got to get Back to my Baby") and gospel/soul singer Percy Wiggins ("Catch this Teardrop"). The disk even has the Memphis blues tradition covered with a wonderful blues with harp master "Memphis" Charlie Musslewhite. If you have any love for traditional soul grooves do yourself a favor and get this fabulous CD IMMEDIATELY!

Yeah, sure you could nit pic this CD ... but why? It's just a fun throw-back type of thing that REALLY hits the mark! Good tunes well recorded with some GREAT musicianship to boot. Buy this CD if you love old Soul music like me!

BB's band without BB. Plenty of good brass work to give that soul sound with a modern twist. I liked it.
