Editorial Reviews

In "Got Proof! My Genealogical Journey Through the Use of Documentation," Lieutenant Commander Michael Nolden Henderson, U.S. Navy retired, captures the attention of genealogists, historians, and others interested in the complex social structure that developed during the French and Spanish colonial periods in Louisiana. He explores forbidden relationships that spawned the unique heritage of Creoles of color. Referencing documents from as far back as the 1770s, Henderson uses his own experiences as a family history researcher and the insight of notes scholars to reveal the methods, standards, and techniques used to prove his ancestry. Part of the story of his ancestors was captured in a 2010 segment of the PBS series, "History Detectives" titled "The Galvez Papers," in which Henderson is featured. Additionally, his efforts led to him becoming the first African American in Georgia to be inducted into the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution in 2010. He has served as vice president and president of his chapter, and, as of this writing, remains Georgia's only African American member.

This is such an amazing story about an intrepid search for the truth of an American family. I couldn't recommend it more highly, to any lover of American history or a beginning genealogist. Henderson writes,"Conducting genealogy research can oftentimes be a lonely experience...I have found that most researchers endure the journey alone, often amid smirks, snide comments, and a complete lack of their family members' interest or understanding." SO TRUE! This is a must-read for anyone who may be stuck in their genealogical journey or who feels unappreciated for their efforts.

Got my book, "Got Proof" a wonderful and rich account of history told by one man on a lonely journey armed with a vast amount of treasured documents to prove his family's history. We all have a history, no doubt and I truly believe we should all aspire to learn "who we are" by taking a similar journey into the past where our ancestors have left breadcrumbs as evidence of their (our) value and contribution to the American society.
Michael Nolden Henderson has not only written about his family history, he has provided nuggets in "Got Proof" that can guide others in such a simplistic manner, following his lead. After all, he is so well deserving of being "the first" at many challenges and accomplishments. This heroic journey into the past is truly a page turning history lesson that was not written in my school history books.

How exciting to read this journey that Michael Henderson takes us on. He starts off just asking a question about his ancestors and ends up finding a fantastic story about Creole history. The genealogical research is first rate and it is obvious that Michael Henderson loved this story. It was refreshing to see the care an insight that he brought to his research and eventually to the story that he discovered. The journey highlights yet another chapter in Creole and Louisiana that would go unnoticed unless people like Michael find them and write them down. Having recently met Michael his passion about this subject and black history is evident. This is a truly insightful and enjoyable book.

A totally enjoyable and interesting read. I liked the fact that it wasn't unnecessary lengthy so, I was able to enjoy reading about a subject which interest me in a few hours. I felt that I could relate to the author's experiences considering I too, grew up in the region where the author grew up. I too have issues trying to encourage some of my relatives to take a greater interest in my genealogical journey as the author tries to do with his family in the book.

Louisiana is known for its bayous and swamps and the thick, mossy dampness that lends itself to secrets. A little hush-hush, a little wink of an eye, and a little something muttered in Creole were enough to pique Michael Henderson’s curiosity about his family and its mysterious roots. Part history, part mystery, "Got Proof!" is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to tackle family genealogy. Two thumbs up and a big hurray to Michael for so eloquently sharing his story with the world.
