Editorial Reviews

Review

“Clever, funny, and spot-on accurate, this book picks up where intuition ends with solid advice and great answers. By turns laugh-out-loud funny and poignant, this is a surefire way for parents to help guide teens (and themselves) through the turbulent years.”
Deborah Arrindell, Vice President, Health PolicyAmerican Sexual Health Association

“The Doctor Moms are funny, honest, and intelligent. Got Teens? is a must-read for any parent with a child in the throes of puberty. This book will become both your bible and your survival guide.”
Debra Hauser, MPH, President, Advocates for Youth

“Finally, a book with actual research by real experts that backs up moms like me when we tell our teens they are normal . . . and quells our fears when we worry that they aren’t.”
Jenny Koppelman Hutt, Host of Just Jenny, Co-host of Dr. Drew on Call

"Yes, parents could just hand kids a couple of Judy Blume books, tell them to have at it, and then answer any questions. But the world has changed a lot since the 1970s, and as great as Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret was (and is), it doesn’t tackle social media, sexting or eating disorders. . . . Got Teens goes over acne, sleep problems, dating relationships, abuse, how to teach your children to be responsible with social media and everything between."
The Washington Post

Can you imagine getting advice from your dearest friends on the most awkward of issues relating to your kids? Well, that is the gift of this book. It truly reads like you are in the midst of a conversation with your close pals, talking about recent issues with your pre-teen child, and yet, you're getting the best advice ever (medical and emotional), from doctors who are moms. Their advice is honest, direct and clear. They provide simple approaches to and medical insights into addressing and understanding so many complex issues. Thank you to Drs. Wider and Levkoff for giving us this easy to read, engaging and insightful book. I know I will be going back to it over and over again.

As the parent two teenagers, I've read (or skimmed in the book store) many parenting books over years. I have had only two reactions to these books: 1) I'm incredulous that people really need to read books that contain what I deem just common sense or 2) The book contains new information for me but is just too damn boring to even think about trying to convert to "kid speak".

That's why "Got Teens" is such a find for the modern parent. Not only are the authors extremely knowledgable about the modern day situations our children face, they have great approaches to communicating with your children about them. There is a feeling when you read this that both Wider and Levkoff remember distinctly what is was like to be a pre teen- teenager. While they take their jobs as educators very seriously they really calm your fears that your child is not the only one facing a particular obstacle. The big plus is that they do all this with a wonderful sense of humor. I could not recommend this book enough.

levkoff and wider really get kids and their parents in this truly informative book. they have a cool and approachable writing style so that you get the message and are able to pass on what you learn to your kids. this is also great information to share from the book with your mature and ready teen. i love how they offer such varying information with humor, wit and truth. a MUST for the parent with teens dealing with social media, instagram, sexuality and all the crazy stuff we have to deal with in this modern age. thank you levkoff and wider for bringing this on!!!

Reading this book is like going to your (very well informed) friends for advice, and coming out armed with just the right information. The doctor moms' guide of how to talk to the teens in your life on just about every taboo subject is absolutely indispensable!

What a find, this book was! I ordered it and read it cover to cover in less than 3 days, but I know I will return to it again and again. Levkoff and Wider offer sound advice to both moms and dads going through, what has to be the most tumultuous time in their kids lives. The material is presented in a funny and easy to digest fashion. With smart phones, and new apps appearing every day, it makes it so difficult to keep up with the challenges our kids face. This book helped quell the fear and gave me very, very good advice on when and how to approach my kids. I have 2 children 12, and 9 and I will be using this book for years to come.

A recent family tragedy involving a teenager led me to wonder what's normal and what are red flags concerning the emotional health of teens. Drs. Wider and Levkoff cover that subject and much more in their book. After reading the chapter on emotional and mental health, I went back and read the entire book. It's extremely well-written and honest. On one subject, i.e. supervised experimentation with alcohol by teens, the doctors disagree and both perspectives were introduced. I will be recommending Got Teens to friends and family as they face the teenage years with their kids.
