A Pleasing Surprise,
By A Customer
This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm so surprised, but I ended up loving this book. This book was actually recommended to me by Amazon.com (you know, that thing that pops up and tells you that "if you are ordering X book, you may like Y book?) when I ordered a Jennifer Crusie book. I took a chance and ordered this novel by Jane Graves. Once I read the cover and scanned a few pages - I wasn't so sure. I'm glad I went ahead and read the book right off and didn't wait - it turned out to be a clever, fast-paced, and well written contemporary romance. You do have to suspend reality to accept the entire premise - realistically, I don't think John would have ever gotten himself involved with someone like Renee (or, at least Renee as she presented herself to him in that diner) but once you accept that fairy tale, the book just takes off. The characters are well written and the relationship between John and Renee is breathtaking - but rings true. John's family is very funny and adds a lot to the story - and that's where my problem is. I'm mad. Know why? Graves includes a sneak at her next book (not due out until Fall 2002!). In this one, she's apparently taking on John's older brother Alex, and I can't wait. I think I would have taken on brother Dave first - I can't imagine how we're going to come to love hot-headed, by-the-book-cop Alex! I hope we do get to meet all the clan one by one (sister Sandy too!!). Well done Ms. Graves!

A Definite Romantic Must Have,
By Renee Hagar (Grand Prairie, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
This romantic comedy has it all: Stong characters, sexual tension, and a fun plot. Ms. Graves produces a page-turning book that leaves you feeling all the toss and turns and twists of the story right along with the characters. And the love story is knock-your-socks-off sexy. If you're looking for a light-hearted romantic comedy--this is the book for you.

...on a fun, fast-paced story! This lively situational comedy is written with on-target humor and irresistible characters. Ms. Graves delivers mystery, plot twists and romantic sizzle without missing a beat! You'll love the 'supporting cast' just as much as the hero and heroine. Great entertainment!

Can I Keep You, Babe?,

This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
I Got You, Babe is a light-hearted romantic comedy that will keep you tuned in and the world tuned out. While in some ways it is predictable knowing madcap adventures are at every corner, Jane Graves has created likable characters that you cant help caring about.Renee Esterhaus is blamed for a robbery she didnt commit. Everyone is convinced of her guilt and the system is set to work against her. Renee, who had quite an impressive police record as a juvenile, has no intentions of going to jail for a crime she didnt commit. So what does a girl do? She runs for it. Unfortunately Renee doesnt anticipate a bounty hunter coming after her. Leandro, the bounty hunter is so big and ugly that just looking at him would give any sane person the creeps. Renee manages to escape Leandro and in the process puts on a big sexual production with a stranger to get a ride as far away from Leandro as she can. Her big plan is to seduce the stranger and rip off his car and money. Things dont quite work out that way when first she is truly attracted (for the first time in a long time) to the stranger, second the stranger turns out to be cop John DeMarco, and third Leandro turns up just as she is about to make her escape. What follows is a madcap adventure. Just when you think nothing else can happen, believe me it does. I was quite impressed with the secondary characters and Johns family (which just happens to be a family with strong ties in one way or another to law enforcement) and I am happy to know the authors next novel will feature Alex, the older brother. Thank you Jane Graves for an upbeat comedy that was the perfect way to spend Labor Day weekend.

It's All Here,
This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
Everything I look for in a book is in I Got You, Babe - humor, great characters and a writing style that makes it impossible for me to put a book down until the last page is turned. I became emotionally invested in the characters and the plot kept me guessing until the end.The humor is great, and not intrusive and contrived like so many other romantic comedy books I've read recently. I loved the cast of supporting characters, too. I hope several of them get their own books in the future!

Renee Esterhaus didn't rob that convenience store, but all the evidence says she did--and she doesn't plan to stay around long enough to rot in jail. When she barely escapes from a bounty hunter, Renee meets up with vacationing cop John DeMarco and promises him a night he'll never forget if he will take her home. Naturally, she has to lie to him, and naturally one lie leads to another. Renee and John zig and zag toward a relationship, fighting the sexual attraction that draws them together and the distrust that keeps them apart. He lives for his job and harboring a fugitive is hardly likely to lead to quick promotion. Renee knows too much about prison to take a chance on the justice system, especially when the evidence all points directly at her. Author Jane Graves (who writes as Jane Sullivan for Harlequin), turns up the fun in this witty and wacky romantic comedy. Building beyond the initial situational comedy (which sadly is too often the entire humor in romantic comedy), Graves introduces amusing characters (I especially liked DeMarco's all-cop family and the bald and battered bounty hunter Leandro), clever dialogue, and wacky handcuff moments of various types. I GOT YOU, BABE combines laugh-out-loud humor with adventure as DeMarco and Renee try to discover the truth behind the crime. This is Graves's first longer novel and it is a brilliant beginning. Well done.

A First Novel of Enormous Promise,
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
With almost any work of fiction, the reader has to participate with the author to the extent of accepting the creator's premise. This participation probably is more of a requirement with romance novels which, bluntly, tend to have more fanciful foundations for their stories than do mainstream fiction. In I GOT YOU, BABE, once the reader buys into the motivating force of this plot, that the heroine has been framed for an armed robbery of a convenience store, the rest of the book flows quite logically. BABE is well-conceived and well-written, with an endearing damsel-in-distress and the prototypical hero who is firm but true. The supporting characters are hilarious. When the immovable object meets the irresistable force, sparks are sure to fly, so the sex scenes in this book are hot, hot, hot. This is a first novel of enormous promise, and I look forward to the sequel.

Woman Fugitve Meets Hot Cop...Whew...,

This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
I was surprised I liked this book so much, because the cover is a cartoon and I was like, 'ugh, I dont know, but it sounds good', boy am I glad I read it and not judged a book by its cover! The male lead was perfect! Sexy and smart and sensitive. The ONLY two complaints I have with this book is the female lead(the fugitive) is kinda clingy and expects miracles out of John (the cop-male lead) but the plot made up for this flaw. The other complaint I had was that the chase between the crazy bounty hunter and Renee (female lead and the fugitive) ended too quickly and that the cabin scenes weren't enough. Other than that, it was great! Action, chase scenes and romance....ahhhh....was all perfect. John's family was wacky and fun and I am excited to read Ms. Graves next book about John's brother Alex. The bounty hunter was one of my favorites and added tons of humor to the story. Lots of funny scenes and humorous situations to make you laugh out loud. Especially the McDonald's scene...I will leave it to the imagination, or until you read it for yourself. Just remember...the drive-through and a fugitive and a cell phone....he he he he....~Renee Esterhaus is on the run for a robbery she didn't commit. Now she is stuck in the middle of a small town in Texas with no money and a broken car and a crazy bounty hunter hot on her trail. With no more ideas and nothing left to do, she pulls together a scewy plan to save her hide. She will proposition the first guy she sees for one night of incredible sex in exchange for a ride out of town. The handsome man she finds sitting at the small coffee shop in 'hillbilly' Texas turns out to be a cop with a steel pair of handcuffs and no patience for criminals! This could only happen to her! John DeMarco is on a much needed rest from his job as a detective in the piney woods where he is using the cabin his boss has given him to use to think. What he doesn't expect to encounter is a beautiful woman with a tempting proposal that he quickly learns was a way to trick him into getting her out of 'Dodge'! Besides the crazy bounty hunter that is after her and the story she tells him, he can't help but think she is innocent. Now, how to prove it? John is about to make one of the biggest mistakes of his life in order to prove to himself that Renee or Alice, as she is calling herself, is the angel she appears to be. But with what price? Harboring is a felony...but is love? Is she who she claims to be? Or some con artist who has perfected the art of lying so much that she can hide it in her eyes... Well worth the money! A keeper! Encore Ms. Graves! Tracy Talley~@

A DEFINITE KEEPER,

This review is from: I Got You, Babe (Mass Market Paperback)
It's always a real thrill to find a new author! A sexy story with humor, love, a chase (actually a couple), great characters and a solid plot make this book a keeper. You won't be disappointed. If you like Cherry Adair, Michelle Jerott, Linda Howard and Lauren Bach (another new author with a five plus book entitled LONE RIDER) you will love this book! Can't wait for Alex's story!

Jane Graves--who also writes wonderful humorous novels for Duets and Temptation--is one of the funniest writers around. You'll love the story of John and Renee. I won't go into the plot but want to say that there were times I was laughing out loud. I'll never be able to go through MacDonalds drive through without grinning. |
