Book Description

The final collaboration from Eddie and Gerald Levert: an intimate glimpse into their lives, their passions, and their musical legacy. But most important, I Got Your Back gets inside the special and rare father-son bond that these two R&B legends shared. Eddie and Gerald put their hearts and souls on the line and talk about their failures, concerns, fears, and triumphs as father and son. With a powerful message of reconciliation for broken families, Eddie and Gerald explore the themes of fatherhood, male bonding and male-female relationships. The book includes moving tributes from Eddie, Patti LaBelle, Steve Harvey and others, as well as treasured family photographs.

Editorial Reviews

I Got Your Back is their powerful and poignant gift to us—a life-enhancing message we so badly need in these difficult days!” —Dr. Cornel West, New York Times bestselling author of Democracy Matters

“When I think of Gerald and Eddie together, I had never seen anything like that in my whole life—seeing a father and son work together, seeing a son look up to his dad, and the type of success they had. The love they shared for each other, the way they talked to each other, the way they got along, and the music they made over the years is truly mind blowing.” —Reverend Run, hip-hop icon, pastor, author of Words of Wisdom, and star of MTV’s Run’s House

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent June 7, 2007
I have been waiting for this book since I heard about it. I got it on the 5th of June, and here it is the 7th of June and I'm done. It is a wonderful, wonderful book. I love the relationship between Gerald & Eddie. Now that dvd's are the thing. I have a vhs tape that I recorded of Gerald & Eddie singing "Wind beneith my wing" I will not get rid of those vhs tape until I find that tape. Every father & son, Mother and daughter should read this book. I can't tell you how much it has changed my way of thinking. My heart goes out to Eddie for the loss of his son, best friend and business partner. My prayers are with you and your family. And Martha you did a wonderful job. I wish my son felt the same about me the way Gerald felt about you. God Bless you all.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love this book June 11, 2007
I read this book in 4 hours and I loved it. I felt as if I were in the room with Eddie and Gerald while they were telling their stories and I could visualize everything they were saying. I have never read a book in such record time in my life. Once you pick it up you will not want to put it down until you are finished. I love Lyah's introductions in every chapter. I also like the use of Eddie and Gerald's songs in the chapters. I appreciate the honesty of Gerald and Eddie. This book was very tasteful and it got the point across without being scandalous or offensive. This book is about father and son geared toward father and son, but we can all take a message from them and be honest with each other and ourselves. Loving you always G.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful! June 27, 2007
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Eddie, I truly enjoyed getting to know you and your beloved son, Gerald while reading "I Got Your Back." Gerald has been a "friend in my head" for some time now, but feel like I've gotten to know him for real. I still can't believe he's not here with us to hear all the praises for all of his hard work. You are amazingly strong (I know it must be hard), but keep your head up for you other children and grandchildren who still need you too. You were amazing on the BET Awards last night. I'm enjoying both CD's too. Long-time fan, Lauren DeShong, from Newark, NJ.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eddie and Gerald Uncut July 28, 2007
It is rare in this day and age to see a father and son team that complements each other as well as the duo of Eddie and Gerald Levert. I GOT YOUR BACK: A Father and Son Keep it Real About Love, Fatherhood, Family and Friendship is a collaboration that brings out the real men behind the on-stage personas the world sees. They opened up to fans and laid it all out; their hopes, dreams, disappointments, mistakes and relationships. No stone was left unturned. They were human beings with faults just like anyone else. They kept it real and didn't try to make themselves appear bigger than life. They each admit their failings and how they learned from them, which in turn was a lesson for each of us. With the state of the black family as it is today, the lessons they imparted on the family are ones to heed.

Lyah LeFlore did an excellent job of uncovering the souls of the men within. The book was organized with many of the chapters starting or ending with lyrics from some of the songs performed by Eddie and/or Gerald Levert. Those songs now take on a whole new meaning for me when I hear them. The book is also written in a style that makes you feel as though you are in the midst of a conversation with both of these men. They shared so much of themselves, I feel I am now a part of the Levert family. Even though Gerald passed away before this project was published, I am sure he would be pleased with its outcome and the outpouring from friends included in the book. I GOT YOUR BACK is a wonderful tribute to the life he lived and shared with his father. When you get your copy, you'll laugh, you'll cry and you may even get mad, but most of all your perspective on life, family and friends will make a definite shift.

5.0 out of 5 stars CD and Book goes hand and hand June 17, 2007
I Got Your Back: A Father and Son Keep it Real About Love, Fatherhood, Family, and FriendshipSomething To Talk About

Both of the above Items are a wonderful gift for Father's Day. Lyah Beth Leflore did an excellent job of having these two great men, Eddie and Gerald Levert to dig deep within their souls to tell the truth, and to understand their hurt, pain, their mistakes, love, the women in their lives, their roles as partners, friends, and father and son, passion of music, and relationships; most importantly, to understand themselves.

I received my book on June 9th, read it in two hours, and would like to read it again. I won't go into the details of the book, because it is so remarkable. I applaud Ms. Martha Levert for her dedication, love, and her strength of holding her family together while Eddie was on the road.

It is so sad that Gerald did not live to witness the response from the outpouring of love and support from fans across the country, but, I am certain that he is looking down smiling. I pre-ordered both the Book and CD, and I am a huge fan of the Leverts. They both can't get any better than this. The CD is "Father and Son, Part 2."

Lyah, again thanks, and my thoughts and prayers are continued for the Levert family, and may God Bless you all with strength, and much success!

What's better than having a dad who is also your best friend. Communication is the KEY, yet we all find it hard to put into practice at times.
