5.0 out of 5 stars A comedic romp, September 24, 2001
This review is from: Got Your Number (Mass Market Paperback)
In Biloxi, Mississippi, though not talking to her father except for funerals, Roxann Beadleman enjoys volunteer work to help wives with abusive husbands. Soon something goes wrong, threats begin to happen, and Detective Joe Capistrano begins asking her questions. Deciding to run away, she attends her cousin Angora Ryder's wedding in Baton Rouge feeling that it is a safe house because everyone knows the strain between Roxann and her family. However, the marriage does not occur as the groom leaves Angora waiting by herself at the altar. Humiliated Angora persuades Roxann to let her join her on the lam. The idea is bad, but having company is appealing so Roxann acquiesces. The twosome flee to their college.

However running from one murder leaves Roxann in the middle of another homicide. Like the killer, Joe is closing in on the two women and he especially wants to keep Roxann safe for about five or so decades because he is falling in love with her just as she is with him.

Though one must wonder about some of Roxanns decisions and those of Angora too, GOT YOUR NUMBER grabs her fans with its thirties-like comedic romantic suspense. The story line is loaded with twists as the two female leads fall in and out of one dilemma after another. Joe is a heroic hunk struggling between love and duty. Stephanie Bond provides readers with that rare humorous yet suspense laden novel that leaves the audience wanting more from a delightful author.

4.0 out of 5 stars They're in Love?, May 7, 2002

This review is from: Got Your Number (Mass Market Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book, but it's not much of a romance. It's full of sexy and sinister secrets, compelling hints and lots of humor. I found Roxann and Joe completely likeable and respectable. Unfortunately, there is such a little part in this book for Joe and she is so good at blocking the few advances he makes that when she and Joe fall in love, you find yourself asking, "Where was I?" But buy the book, anyway. Stephanie Bond moves the story forward at a good clip and with firm control, keeping you reading and wondering and feeling fairly satisfied that all the pieces of her complex puzzle fit so nicely together. All but the romance.

This is my first Stephanie Bond book but it won't be my last. This is the kind of book I love. . .hunky, alpha-type hero, smart heroine, complicated but well defined characters, a smart story line, a mystery that is actually difficult to figure out, action, humor, sexy love scene. . .Hey! This one has it all! A definite keeper and I can't wait to order OUR HUSBAND and any other book I can find by SB. Great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Memorable Characters, March 19, 2004

Roxanne and her dimwitted cousin, Angora, are very well drawn. You can get frustrated with bimbo Angora, but it makes perfect sense for her to be the way she is with her shallow, overbearing mother and superficial "country club" lifestyle. Love the pictures the author draws of Angora and her mom!

Capistrano is a delicious character, as well, and Roxanne's vacillation is very believable, given the hunkiness of this detective and the non-self-acceptance of Roxanne.

There were a few flaws, like when Roxanne dumps coffee on Capistrano and gets fired from her waitressing job. First of all, this is more than a firing offence, it's assualt & battery! Secondly, Capistrano wouldn't yelp, then brush it off, jogging alongside Roxanne not long after. Still, the characters grab you and keep you going!

4.0 out of 5 stars Ever made the wrong decision for the right reason?, February 8, 2009
This review is from: Got Your Number (Mass Market Paperback)
Roxann certainly has and now it's come back to haunt her. Of course it's hard to tell what exactly it is that's come back since there seems to be multiple issues. The issues are all solved, in part with the help of Detective Joe Capistrano and the guidance of an eight ball.

Loved the pepperspray scene. Lot of threads throughout but they come together nicely.
