Good Action Comedy Gets Ya,
By
This review is from: Gotcha [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Great scenes of Europe pre-U.S.S.R breakup. The Berlin Wall was a formidable thing to see. When our hero gets caught up in a spygame where they shoot bullets instead of paintballs he knows he's in trouble. If you enjoyed movies like "Top Secret", "Little Nikita", and "Sneakers" you should enjoy this movie. It is a mix of action and comedy. It moves at a good pace. Good cast, sets, and music.

Bambi does James Bond!,

This review is from: Gotcha! (DVD)
It was 1985, songs still had lyrics and the bigger your hair the more popular you were.
One of the few movies capturing the 80's feeling with a great story line and future actors taking their first bow in movie world. Set in the cold war era, it takes the viewer on a rollercoaster ride through Paris and Germany. With a balance of adventure, action, comedy and a bit of a love story it becomes an alltime favorite. Jonathan Moore(Edwards) plays a naive all American student on a trip to Europe with loosing his virginity as his first priority. He gets played by an experienced operative (Fiorentino) in more ways then one and ends up being chased by CIA & KGB for carrying spy information across the border. Back on his own turf he controls the game and falls back on his skills as paintball wiz to let the bad guys take the fall. Excellent music of the time with Frankie Goes to Hollywood & Nick Kershaw to name a few.

Great Fun,
This review is from: Gotcha! (DVD)
This movie brings me back to the old days. I remembered it being great fun to watch, and it still is. If ever I feel like watching an intertaining movie, I can never go wrong with this one. People might feel different, but if you liked the 80's and it's humor, you will like this.

Excellent movie!,
This review is from: Gotcha! (DVD)
I love this movie since my preteen years. After watching it again and again, it makes me think of Bourne Identity and Mission Impossible, just it has that eighties movies/music cheesiness I love! It has a great plot and the acting is decent. Nice to see the ER doc with hair, too.

This is a must-see movie classic back from the 80s, time of Cold War and espionage. Why hasn't it been released on DVD yet?

Amusing and intelligent spy tale,
By
This review is from: Gotcha [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is a humorous and intelligent spy tale about a naive and vulnerable college student who winds up way over his head in suspense while travelling Europe with his friend. Anthony Edwards plays the unknowing and unwilling pawn in this story, while the gorgeous Linda Fiorentino is the woman who Edwards falls for.The plot in the story is the student (Edwards) travels to Europe with a friend and along the way he plays a paintball game called Gotcha. However Edwards finds "Sasha" a beautiful woman on the run from the KGB, and quickly falls for her. From there the story takes many twists and turns and the finale is great. The supporting cast in the movie is excellent and enhances the story as well. The movie definitely worth a look!

Saw this in the theater when it first came out many many years ago. Bought it to enjoy it again. Got my wife to watch it with me, though it is not exactly a chick flick she enjoyed it. For most it requires suspending your disbelief. You have to remember it was made in a different era before many things changed. A major plot device, paint ball guns are a significant part in the beginning of this movie. Paint ball gun wars were actually happening at one time. But today you even dream of trying this and the cops will swarm around you. This was also at a time before so many campus shootings which has made everyone jumpy over any gun. The cold war was in full swing and Eastern Europe was a dangerous place to go visit. For many they will find this movie a tad too unbelievable. But for those of us old enough to really remember the times it is a simple yet quite enjoyable flick.
The plot is simple enough. Slightly odd geeky rich college boy involved in a paint ball gun war and desperately seeking to get laid goes on a spring break trip with his college roommate (a womanizing East LA gang member) to Europe. While his roommate is off getting women to swoon over him, he ends up looking like a dorky tourist as he sits in a coffee shop. An slightly older woman picks him up and so he finally gets laid. Then she gets him to go to with her to Eastern Germany. Being a dork and desperate for sex he does not realize that she is a spy and the danger he is placed in by her. She uses him to transport some film out of Eastern Germany. He ends up being chased around Europe by some East block spy thugs. He manages to get on a plane back home where he finds that several groups of spy characters are after something he has. Takes him a bit to realize that he has a roll of film that is not his. Once he gets his big head doing some thinking he finally turns the tables on all the spies. The finish that really resonated with the guys in the theater years ago is where he uses a tranquilizer gun to nail a stuck up college girl that has coldly and cruelly spurned every advance he has made to her.

Gotcha, starring Anthony Edwards and Linda Fiorentino, is an overlooked classic.
It captures the feeling of a time (1980s, with a whiff of 1970s) and places (LA, UCLA, Paris, and East/West Berlin with the wall still up) just perfectly in a light, and at times comedic, spy thriller romance. I don't know if that is a film category, but it does combine all those elements elegantly in a fun story. If you lived in or visited any of these places at that time, you will understand that this film hits the mark as an imaginative cultural touchstone of all that. The true test passed is that it has staying power and remains enjoyable after many viewings. The soundtrack and the film techniques complement the story and move the action along. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. by Clif Tinker
