4.0 out of 5 stars What's Here is Quite Good January 2, 2003
Format:Audio CD
This is a nice example of late-career Dexter, as this was recorded in 1981.
Dexter is on top of his game and spurred to action by a great supporting cast: Art Blakey on drums, Percy Heath on bass and Cedar Walton on guitar, with guest appearances by George Benson on guitar and Woody Shaw on trumpet.
If you like Dexter, you'll like this.
The only con is the short length, around 33 minutes

3.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet. January 8, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This is a very listenable, kind of smooth swinging session. It's not the best of Dexter's late career work but far from the worst. The crew, consisting of Dexter with Woody Shaw (tp), Cedar Walton (p), George Benson (g), Percy Heath (b), and Art Blakey (d), is relaxing and having a good time. Dexter and Art Blakey were two of the figures most instrumental in keeping the flame of straight-ahead, swinging jazz going in the late 1970s - early 1980s, and inspiring the generation of young musicians who made the jazz rennaisance. It's nice to hear them together.

It's a short (34 minutes) album composed of four tracks: Hi-Fly, A Nightingale Sang in Berkley Square, Blues Walk, and another blues, Gotham City. It would have been a better album without having two uptempo blues in sequence. Gotham City seems like filler. The best tracks are Hi-Fly and Nightingale, for the reason that they showcase Dexter's melodic storytelling, which was increasingly becoming the reason to listen to Dexter as the physical aspect of his playing started declining. Dexter shows that he can still handle uptempo swinging blues on this album, but he can't reach quite the same heights of as he could a few years before. His tone is less robust, his attack is slightly less certain, and he seems to fall short a little in bringing his ideas to fruition. He relies a little more on cliches and honking. But those flaws show up much worse on albums other than this one. The ciggies were gaining the upper hand over Dexter's tenor, but the advantage wasn't decisive yet.

The quality of the playing would make this a four star album, but its shortness and flawed assemblage of tunes make it somewhat less.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid June 13, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
The flexibilityof jazzmaster Dexter Gordon makes an otherwise bland album noteworthy. The complete push to mellow swings of Gordon's sound keeps the listener intrested.
