This review is from: Gothic Ghost Stories (Paperback)
Mott provides six stories on various Gothic themes. I was amazed at what a chore it was to finish each one, as my mind kept wandering away from the plot.

At first I attributed this to the poor language skills. There were many times when a line of dialogue was killed by being poorly written. ("Me too," was way overused as a way of signaling agreement.)

That is not to say there was no merit. "Business as Usual" and "Empathy" were original ideas, and "The Girl in the Water" and "The Last of the Seven Brothers" were interesting takes on familiar stories. However, the remaining two ("Only Pretend" and "The Goth Girl"), with their focus on the beauty and uniqueness of the heroines, give away Mott's biggest weakness.

Without really knowing anything about the author beyond reading the book (including the dedication and foreword), I would have to say that Mott is in love with Goth Girls, and with being one herself, and that conceit weakens every story line, turning downright smug in "The Girl in the Water".

If you allow for the handicaps of narcissism and limited vocabulary, I suppose the book came out pretty well, but I think she should work on those two areas before writing another one.
