5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully diverse intro to Gothic music..., March 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gothik (Audio CD)
This was actually the first compilation of Goth tunes I ever set ears on, so it's always been kinda special to me in that regard. It was through this compilation that I was able to discover many of the bands I continue to enjoy today.

This is a wonderful compilation, with a wide variety of modern and classic Gothic Rock songs. Also some hard to find gems on here. (I don't know of anywhere else this particular version of Rosetta Stone's "Nothing" appears, for example..this version is far creepier than the others!)

Pick this up if you're looking for an intro to some of the lesser known bands in the scene. Granted, most of the groups here are on the Cleopatra label, but there's enough of a mix to give anyone who's curious a good flavour for the scene. It certainly served me well, and I can't possibly recommend it highly enough.

If anyone from Cleopatra is reading this, take note: PLEEEASE keep this comp in print, as future fans deserve to enjoy it as much as I have...

Oh, one last thing - under 20 bucks is a GREAT deal for this double-CD compilation. I paid over 40 bucks in the store for mine, pfeh...

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Goth!, May 1, 1999

Some cool music! A bit on the hard side. Not for people who like more mellow goth like 'Disintegration, by the Cure' (my personal fave goth album!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Could've been great with better song choices, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Gothik (Audio CD)
Cleopatra Records' "Gothik" is a decent compilation overall, that could have been so much better with different song choices. On a positive note, the compilation includes only one or two well-known acts, leaving much of the two-disc set to be filled with obscure artists. However, the selection of artists and tracks could've been much better, and it would have vastly improved the listening experience. Simply put, there are far too many mediocre tracks on this release. That isn't to say it's an ungodly awful compilation; it includes several great tracks by bands that I'm now looking into because of this compilation (The Wake, Executive Slacks, Midnight Configuration). Whether the next problem was Cleopatra's or the band's doing is still in question, but there's an alternate version of Brotherhood of Pagans' "Resurrection" on the release that merely adds a sharp synth to the melody, and it's unbelievable just how much worse it sounds with it. If I hadn't heard and fallen in love with the band before this compilation, I probably wouldn't have thought twice about ignoring them altogether.
