I found this CD in the local library and liked the sultry lounge singer "film noir" look of the cover art. As we all know, John McVie is one of the frontmen for Fleetwood Mac and the goofy-named "Gotta Band" is basically Fleetwood Mac sans Nicks and Buckingham. So, the production quality on this disc will surprise you. Way more than you would expect from an unknown....Lola Thomas.

As far as I know, this is the only recording Lola Thomas ever made. Who she was, or what became of her, is a total mystery. I can't find anything on the Interent. But, one thing that is no mystery is that this woman can SING!!

I have a huge collection of CDs, and this ranks as one of my favorites. Lola's voice is both sultry and melodic.....with great POWER. All of the songs are completly unfamiliar at first listening. But, this is one of those CDs that just grows and grows on you. It's comprised mostly of R&B ballads highlighted with Fleetwood Macs stylings. But, every track is strong and at least one of the songs, "Shot Down By Love", it one I just can't forget. I wish you could hear a clip so you know what I mean. Truly one of the greatest singing performances I have heard.

I see that this CD can be picked up used for next to nothing. Don't hesitate. DO IT!!!! You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars John McVie is awesome!, December 30, 2003

I'm a bassist/vocalist and a songwriter, and I'm a huge fan of John McVie. In fact, if it weren't for John McVie, I wouldn't even be a musician.
This is the first and only solo album of McVie's. McVie is of course the bassist and fouding member of Fleetwood Mac. He's very underrated because of his humble personality, however he's obviously one of the best bassists this world has seen. He has been called "the best blues bassist in all of music." He has an amazing tone, and he purposely stays in the background supporting the vocalist(s). This album also marks the first time we hear McVie sing, however it is only backing vocals. Singing and playing bass at the same time is no easy task. McVie sang once with Fleetwood Mac, which was background on "Say You Love Me" on The Dance album.
Though Lola Thomas is clearly unknown, she is a fine vocalist. If you're a bassist, or simply a fan of Fleetwood Mac, this album is certainly a good buy. It hasn't been reissued, and I doubt it will be. This album is extremely rare. I suggest buying it while you still can! McVie is phenomenal, and he certainly shines in the spotlight, which isn't his usual playing environment.
Also be sure to check out Fleetwood Mac's Say You Will, The Dance, and The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac.
