An insightful and inspiring collection of interviews with ten women authors, I Gotta Crow explores and celebrates the voice of the woman writer. With grace and wisdom, author Jill Hackett also instructs all women writers about their respective "voice"how to find it, how to refine it, and how to liberate it. Written especially for women writers, this book shares the first-hand stories of acclaimed authors such as Caroline Bird, Regina Barrecca, and Carolivia Herron. Women writers are sure to see bits of themselves in the stories shared by this ethnically and socially diverse group of authors that range in age from eighty four to twenty four and who work in most every writing genre-poetry, nonfiction, memoir, academic, and even children's. I Gotta Crow is the perfect book for women writers of any background. Professional writers will enjoy the insights of their peers, and students will benefit by heeding the lessons learned by these outspoken, independent, endlessly creative women. It is both a profound literary study and a compelling examination of the creative process and women's culture in America.
Author, teacher, lecturer -- Jill brings her hands-on and academic experience to the issue of women and voice. Jill presents dynamic workshops, and her client list includes Hewlett-Packard's Women at Work series, the National Speaker's Association, Society for Technical Communications, and colleges and universities.
First trained as a technical writer for over 20 years, Jill was taught to write mute -- nothing breathing, just the facts. Erase the person from the piece. This discipline of structure and function over voice both strengthened her writing craft, and fueled Jill's desire to understand the art of writing: to find her voice.
She apprenticed herself to women authors ages 24 to 84, and learned how they discovered, defined, and developed their writing voice. In her on-going workshops and seminars, she continues to help women find their authentic creative voice.
Jill holds degrees in mathematics, human development and psychology, and communications from Vassar, Harvard, and The Union Institute & University.
She's an east coast writer who spends as much time as she can in Umbria, Italy right on the Tuscan border. Follow her adventures on her blog at www.eatplaycook.com
