Best performance of the Grande Tarantelle available., March 1, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Gottschalk: A Night in the Tropics / Grand Tarantelle (Audio CD)
Compared to Eugene List's later recording of the Grande Tarantelle for Piano and Orchestra, this one is far superior. The precision is superior and the clarity Mr. Nibley's playing makes Mr. List's performance seem positively muddy.

Abravanel & Utah are superb, October 7, 2010
This review is from: Gottschalk: A Night in the Tropics / Grand Tarantelle (Audio CD)
I originally owned the Barclay-Crocker Reel-to-Reel prerecorded tape(Dolby B encoded - duped at one quarter speed)and then transferred it to CD. The playing by the Utah Symphony is spectacular and Abravanel seems to have a special touch with music of this sort. The solo trumpet is wonderful without the blare and swaqgger, but with a tenderness and consistency of tone that I particularly appreciate. Even though the upper strings seem a bit steely at times the orchestra responds superbly to Abravanel's approach. The brass, woodwinds, and percussion are really superb. You will probably use this disc as a demonstration piece. This disc is highly recommended.

Opening Blast of Orchestral Americana, March 26, 2008
This review is from: Gottschalk: A Night in the Tropics / Grand Tarantelle (Audio CD)
Opening Blast of Orchestral Americana
The Allegro Moderato from Gottschalk's A Night In The Tropics may be the real opening blast of Orchestral Americana. No wonder Van Dyke Parks was so taken with it!
This piece and this performance is essential listening if you have ever closed your eyes during a Hollywood film to better concentrate on the great soundtrack! Maurice rules in these here latitudes, senior!
(Note to HiFi nuts: I cannot speak to the CD, but my original Vanguard LP captures the orchestra wonderfully--especially the unison brass and string.)
