This is the best recording of Gounod's Roméo et Juliette opera. Although the CD Cover says it is (c) 1998, it was recorded in October 1995.
This is a re-package by EMI of the same exact recording that seems to be sold out, at least here in Amazon. You can find the Highlights CD on Amazon by searching for Gounod + Plasson.
I must say that, for the price, this re-packagin is a scam. It does NOT have the libretto nor the translation. On the back of the package says you can get them at the emiclassics website, which is a scam for the price I paid. Also, the packaging is very poor and cheap, more according to a $5,00 CD than to this.
Regardless of all of this, again, this is the BEST R&J available, so you can't get wrong with it. The music, direction and singing are excellent and the opera is a pretty good one.

Apart from the sparse packaging, absence of libretto and medium price, this recording disappoints. The supporting cast is quite good, and there is more music than I care to hear, but the stars fail to move me. While neither Alagna nor Gheorghiu is French, the pronunciation is notably better than with Corelli and Freni. The voices are strong and appear to be true, with at least one high note interpolated for each. The problem for me is their inability to project the role with the requisite clarity, quality and tenderness for this delicate French romance.

I sought a full recording to complement the Myto live recording at the Met (1947), where I was privileged to hear Bjoerling but not in this role. The ballet sections in the EMI, not in my score, are superfluous. The cuts in the Met performance are almost all filled in, for which I am grateful, but it takes three disks.

To compare these two lovers with Bjoerling and Sayao is simply impossible. Neither of the Met stars was French, the cuts are annoying, and the sound is very uneven. But the beauty of tone and the ability to convey the import and music of the French must be without parallel. From the first line of Romeo to the death of the pair, the Myto set is thrilling.

It is a puzzle why we have no recordings of French stars as Romeo and Juliette. As I write this, it strikes me that FAUST is also best served by Bjoerling, in a live (pirate?) recording on Myto, while de los Angeles is my favorite Marguerite in another recording. I cannot recall any outstanding French singers recorded in Gounod's other famous opera.
