Charles Gounod is best known today for his opera "Faust" and his "Ave Maria" based on a Bach prelude, but he was a prolific composer of sacred music as well as several operas and symphonies. Gounod considered becoming a priest at one time, and he thought his sacred works were his greatest musical contributions. His best known sacred work is the Saint Cecilia Mass, first performed in Paris on the Saint's day, November 22, 1855.

This work follows the standard sectional presentation of the Catholic mass: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo. Sanctus, Benedictus, and Agnus Dei, but with an added instrumental Offertory after the Credo and a final Domine Salvam section written by Gounod as a prayer for the church, the military, and the French nation. The Agnus Dei also contains an added sentence of repentance added by Gounod. The mass is scored for soprano, tenor, and bass soloists, chorus, and full orchestra.

Although Gounod intended this mass to be a sacred work, it is to some extent operatic, with arias, duets, and trios for the soloists, and several powerful choruses in the vein of Meyerbeer and Verdi. The orchestration includes drums and other percussion, although a version for organ accompaniment also exists. The music teeters between grandiose and truly grand, with melodies that are sometimes saccharine and othertimes heartfelt. It is a typical mid-19th Century dramatic work.

After a rather subdued Kyrie, the mass comes to life in the Gloria, which begins softly with a solo soprano but soon becomes quite dramatic with entry of the chorus. The opening of the Credo is one of the best parts, with its insistent rhythmic vitality. Interestingly, "Et vitam venturi saeculi" at the end of the Credo, customarily set as a fugue, is here a simple melody with harp accompaniment.
