Gourd pyrography is a fancy phrase for the folk art of using heat to carve and scorch gourds. These beautiful objects are found in Nigeria, Kenya, Mali, Ghana, Senegal, China, Peru, Mexico, New Guinea, and the South Pacific. Early methods, involving fire and burning coals, have been superseded by modern tools and solid-state wood-burning systems. Here, four artists walk us through several projects using basic techniques, applying butterfly, floral, and geometric designs to pear-shaped gourds. This is an amazing book. I look at it over and over because of the beautiful photography and for the inspiration it provides to try different techniques. Recommended to anyone interested in art or nature.

I thought this book would have more directions in it. Also there were no pictures to copy.

This is the definitive book in pyrography on gourds. The photography is beautifully done and the book is chock full of great ideas. If you haven't tried pyrography on gourds - or on anything else, give it a go. It's habit forming!
