Book Description

March 6, 2007
Brooklyn girl Lili Marino moved to the tiny village of Walden Corners, New York, to find a place where she could pursue her craft: taking gourds from the garden and transforming them into birdhouses, bowls, and beautiful works of art. She never expected to find herself tangled in the vines of some tough mysteries as well... The peace that Lili first found in Walden Corners is hard to find lately: the townspeople are violently divided over plans for a casino. Even Lili's friends are at odds, and she's starting to wonder if her beautiful new life is in jeopardy. Then her bathroom ceiling springs a leak-and when she investigates, a rifle comes clattering down on her head. A vocal proponent of the casino project has been shot in the woods near her house, and all eyes are on Lili. If she doesn't want to trade her gourds for license plates, she's got to find the real killer-and to do that, she'll need a little help from her friends...

More About the Author

Who ever thought that a girl from Brooklyn would fall in love with...gourds? But I did, on trip through the southest with my husband, and life hasn't been the same since! I now decorate them, write about them in the Lili Marino series, and have a whole room of my house set aside for gourd work.

In my life BG (Before Gourds)I wrote seven mystery novels and edited six anthologies as Marilyn Wallace. I've been a high school English teacher, a potter, a pastry chef, and a computer programmer, and now those experiences are fair game for my fiction.

After living in upstate NY and in northern CA, my husband and I have returned to our roots in Brooklyn, NY, where our two grown sons also live.

5.0 out of 5 stars gourdfellas, March 13, 2007
This review is from: Gourdfellas (Gourd Craft Mystery #2) (Paperback)
I'd really have to give this 4.5 stars instead of the full 5. I wasn't too impressed by the first book in this series, but I tried the second one anyway. This book was a lot better. Mainly, the book was much faster paced, which I think is essential to a good mystery novel. The first 50 pages are a little sluggish, but the plot picks up from there. The ending was a little predictable, though.

We learn more about Lili's family too. I still feel that there is something missing from this book, though. Maybe the gourds are the problem. I personally find any passage dealing with a gourd to be incredibly boring, but that is only my opinion. Other readers will feel differently.
