Not sure how up to date this book is,

This review is from: Gout Hater's Cookbook II: The Low Purine Diet Cookbook (Spiral-bound)
As someone recently diagnosed with gout, I am amazed by how much contradictory information there is out there about this disease and how to eat properly to manage its symptoms.
Some doctors and books (this one included) advise to cut out vegetables like lentils, spinach, artichokes, avocados and legumes because they contain high amounts of purines. But an important Harvard study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that purines in vegetables do NOT contribute to gout. Many self-proclaimed gout experts don't seem to be aware of this groundbreaking study. They tell gout sufferers to cut out high purine vegetables under the assumption that any food containing high purine levels MUST by definition be bad for gout. But it seems that vegetable purines may have less effect on uric acid levels than, say, meat and yeast purines. Obviously, this is crucial information for gout sufferers. It could mean that a whole world of vegetables, eaten in moderation, might not be bad for you after all. The authors of this book seem to be in the dark about this. I recommend that everyone suffering from gout do all the research they can and get a variety of opinions before cutting out foods that may have health benefits.

It is so hard to find information on gout. This book is well-researched, offers lots of information and the recipes are delicious and easy to fix. The bibliography alone is worth the price.

Received Gout Hater's Cookbook I as a gift and my wife has used the recipes and important tips for the last year. Information is provided in a concise easy to use style. We just added Gout Hater's Cookbook II and III to our kitchen reference library and we now have three times as many great recipes to use. We can't wait for Cookbook IV and hope that it includes a master index of the recipes from all versions. Thanks for making this information available to us.

After a harrowing week away from home at a conference where I seriously considered renting a electic scooter, my foot pain was diagnosed as gout. I had only vaguely heard of it. I had thought that the pain was from an old judo injury. Not so, says the doctor, whereupon he gives me a list of foods to avoid. Geez! On top of the other food allergies I have (no tomatoes, shell fish, eggs, fruit, nuts, and an assortment of other stuff) I said you just might as well have put me on bread and water!
So, it was serious. I mean no meats, beans, wine, avocado and such! Staples of my diet previously. I didn't realize that some vegetables were heavy in purines. This was going to be a severly restricted diet. On the web, I looked for articles on foods I could eat, but morphed into looking for menus as well. This is where I found the Gout Hater's Cookbook II (and the other's but I only purchased II as my initial purchase) provided me with excellent examples of edible menus. Of course, for me, there are many recipes I cannot use because of my other allergies. Still, my wife has cooked up the Vege Burger (using rice etc and leaving out the tomatoes), and it was excellent. We made them as sliders piled with onions, lettuce, and cheese, and used horseradish mayonaise from our local Asian grocery. I know that many people do not have the span of food allergies I have, but the Cookbook II has been extremely helpful and hopeful in spite of this difficulty. Well, thanks to the author for delivering us from gout hell. Your work is much appreciated.

Gout Hater's Cookbook series is a collection of books, approximately 100 pages each. 1/3 of the information in each book is redundant and cut and pasted frm book to book. Information is relatively outdated and the recipes are so simple that one does not need these books to find useful recipes. The price is outrageous. The entire series could have been collected in one small book that could be priced for less than $20.00. The author has taken advantage of the patinet's need for information and has made what would constitute a chapter into a book so that she could sell more books. Avoid buying these series. Use internet.

An statement so contrary, and controversial, as the one of Matthew Testa deserves this observation. Mentioning the JAMA as the authority on the subject but without giving the entire source, such as year, volume, page and authors is useless, it is like citing the Bible without telling in what book and chapter is the subject in discussion.

It turns out I do NOT have gout, but this compendium of recipes that enables one to live with the disease would be essential in anyone's collection of cook books.
