Classic Couperin chamber music for an aging Sun King,

Couperin wrote these pieces to please the aging (and ailing) Louis XIV, as he pined away in Versailles toward the end of his long reign. They are sweet, quiet, but extremely well crafted chamber pieces making effective use of both strings and winds. If you have heard Couperin's "Concerts Royaux", you will find yourself in familiar territory, since these logically follow on after the concerts. Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques are, in my mind, the premiere French Baroque chamber group operating today. Their tone is ideally suited to these works, and execution is flawless. My one complaint is price. This is fabulous music-making, but at full price for two discs. I don't think its as competitive as it could be, particularly with most labels dipping into their vaults and re releasing classic baroque recordings from the past 25 years as twofers at mid- or bargain prices. And, then of course, there's Naxos. So while this is "state of the art" in terms of authentic baroque playing, you do pay a lot for it.
