A real Tournier-story.,
By Niva van de Geer (Berghem, the Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: La Goutte D'Or (Collection Folio) (Mass Market Paperback)
The reason I chose to review this book is because Michel Tournier has personally visited our school last year to talk with us about his books, his life and his view on life in general. To prepare for his visit we read 'La goutte d'or' in class and we found (even more after Tournier's visit) that it is a very characteristic Tournier-story. This story about Idriss, a nomadic boy who discovers the world outside his little community, is packed with symbolism and Tournier uses this, seemingly simple, story to bring his view on life across to the reader. I think Tournier has, by writing this book, once again succeeded in bringing these views across to a large public and, by doing so, making them think about life and their own lives. All in all I think Tournier has reached his goal, which he repeatedly mentioned during his visit to our school is making more people think about their lives and making them interested (or at least a little interested) in philosophy. Therefore this book is a must-read for those that are interested philosophy and even if you are not this is a very good book to learn about Tournier and his, very unique, style .

This review is from: La Goutte D'Or (Collection Folio) (Mass Market Paperback)
The imagery described in this book is vivid and not for the faint of heart. The storyline was intriguing and deep, one of the reasons I enjoyed reading it. It was a fairly short read and the author did a great job of creaing the story, making ends meet, and making me think/reflect. Not many books do that now-a-days. I would recommend this book.
