Editorial Reviews

CPO concludes the original symphonic editions this month with the Gouvy Edition. Gouvy was born in 1819 in Goffontaine (today's Scheidt-Schafbrucke), just outside Saarbrucken. When he died in 1898, he was regarded as a Frenchman in Germany and as a German in France. No other foreign composer's works were performed as frequently in the 1850s in Leipzig as Gouvy's.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful By J. R. Trtek on December 23, 2013
This is one of (currently) four discs from CPO devoted to the symphonic music of Louis Theodore Gouvy, a French composer born in Prussian territory who drew inspiration from both those cultures. He wrote instrumental music at a time when his Gallic compatriots were obsessed instead with opera, and when he moved to Germany during the last portion of his life did not find much success there, either. This album contains three works: The Symphony No. 4, Symphonie breve (sometimes listed as No. 6), and the Fantaisie Symphonique. The first two date from the mid-1850s, while the third was composed two decade later. All in all, these pieces are fairly engaging Romantic works. I confess that I found the Symphony No. 4 to be energetic but a bit predictable and uninspired -- to me, it holds great promise, but the second shoe never really falls. The Symphonie breve, a seven-movement composition, perhaps doesn't slap you in the face as much but still offers a more fulfilling journey. For me, however, the real star of this release is the Fantaisie Symphonique, which to my untrained ear is ripe with intrigue, mystery, introspection and occasional Brahmsian flashes. On the whole, of the three Gouvy discs that I've listen to so far, this is the best of the lot, with one more to go.
